Said it in another thread, but it's worth one of it's own.

I wouldn't be surprised if Emre's sold in January which I don't particularly object to. He's not set the world on fire and is not quick enough or consistent enough to be considered irreplaceable. But for God's sake, surely he could take the place of either Butt, Geremi or Smith in midfield? We don't need all three in there scuffling and scrapping (fat lot of good it's done against Arsenal and City).

Worth a go I think and will give us someone who can carry the ball forward from midfield. Bear in mind also that Barton is not going to start for a few weeks by the sound of it.

You can make this a poll if you like mods.

barton should be ready for spurs so i'd play emre through the middle V everton.

Barton's likely to be out for 4-5 weeks. I can't see him being back for the Spurs game in 3 weeks.

Emre really livened us up against Arsenal, I was very impressed with his link-up with Oba and N'Zogbia. He should be playing as the creative force in our midfield.

i'd also like to see emre next to geremi and butt/smith. would give us a bit more flair, and it isn't as if he is not capable of working hard or so....

I know that there is very little chance of this as BS will probably play Butt, Smith and Geremi but V Everton at home i'd be positive and play:

                Harper

Beye  Taylor  Roze  Enrique

Milner  Geremi  Emre    Zoggy

            Viduka  Martins

Subs; Harper, Faye, Butt, Smith, Owen??

at home, we should start with

BEYE  CACAPA  ROZEY  ENRIQUE

MILNER  BARTON  EMRE  ZOG

        MARTINS  VIDUKA

definitely give us a bit of creativity in midfield, and plenty of width. a right back and a left back that like to get forward on the break, can see lots of goals for us  there.

Yes, we definitely need creativity in midfield.

I still really want to know what Alan Smith does in a 3-man midfield.  Gérémi and Butt are defensive-minded players, so I can understand.  But since Smudge can (apparently) also play as a striker, surely he should be an attack-minded player, and should try to play the role of an attacking, creative midfield player.

Fair enough, he might not be as suited to such a role, but if Sam hasn't tried encouraging him to play as such, what hope is there that Emre would come in in such a role?

I hope Emre does better than he has so far for us, he's got a lot to prove.  I don't see him being as good as some people think he is and his injury record is very poor.

It's not even a case of thinking he's so good. Just an alternative to having Smith, Geremi and Butt all running on the spot in the centre circle.

cannot see smith getting dropped imho as i said in another thread he seems to be fat sam and fat mikes golden boy and who will argue against that statement

What I don't understand about this whole Smithy thingy, is surely that Sam's Pro Zone and other softwares will show that Smith has contributed zilch attacking wise. Does Sam just go blanko when reading Smith's stats?!

as long as we keep Smith out of the 11,use Emre instead,Smith is just good enough ,everytime he did a bad past or lost the ball against City he just gave it :tickedoff: up,he is not bleeding black and white yet :tickedoff:

They show he runs about a lot.

excactly - and probably also that he is around the "action" zone quite a bit

unfortunately that doesn't make him a good player in that position...

for the 10 minutes Smith played upfront against West Ham he showed more than all season so far in midfield. I think Big Sam must get the idea that Smith is not a midfielder. To be fair I thought he could be used as one but he has been gash so far in midfield. I would give up on Shola and consider Smith as one of my forwards. I am sure there is someone out there that would spend a few quid on Shola no goal.

I don't fully trust Emre in the midfield. Defensively he's weak and he often seems to play only in bursts.

I thought he looked better (not brilliant, but better) on the occasions when he was a withdrawn striker, linking midfield and attack. If we're playing a 4-3-3, I'd put him further forward ie -

Beye Taylor Faye Enrique

Geremi Roz Smith

  Milner......Emre

.........Viduka

Use Zoggy and Martins as impact subs.

In a 3 man midifeld do you really need Geremi Roz and Smith? To my mind, if you've got two of Geremi/Butt/Smith in there, that's enough defensive cover. You can afford to have an Emre in the middle, with Zog, Milner and Viduka as the front three.

hold your horses mate - now you've got five defenders and four midfielders on the pitch - this will be a disaster.

I suppose I'd tend to look at it the other way - that if you've only got three in the midfield, you can't afford to have someone who's tackling and work rate is suspect. I'd agree though that our particular threesome isn't ideal, and I think the addition of Barton will make a big difference.

I think the 4-3-3 needs players who are a bit more versatile, because the wide players are expected to drop back. Really the formation ought to be called 4-3-2-1. Milner and Emre have played as withdrawn strikers in that space between midfield and striker, and I think that's where they're at their best.

On the defence side, Beye and Enrique are both good going forward, and Roz has played quite a lot in midfield. So I think the balance between attacking and defensive players isn't as warped as you're suggesting.

As much as I think the Smith money could have been used better he is a decent striker, not a great goalscorer but someone who works hard and will worry defenders with his aggressive nature.

He would be Viduka's back up for me but in midfield I just don't think he offers much apart from the fans getting to see that pretty yellow thing the ref seems to carry around with him every game.
