Bent so far, without a doubt.

English players are ridiculously priced. Bayern Munich picked up Podolski last summer, he was 20 when they signed him with 46 goals in 83 Bundesliga games and more than 10 goals at International level.

£7 million.

In the system that fat sam wants to play, I'd rather have Darren Bent than Martins.

In fact, I'd rather have Bent than Martins anyway. Much better player.

Something is wrong with a football club when the chairman and director of football get mentioned with respect to player acquisitions more than the manager does - I'm sure MJ or KD can make a convincing case against this, and I'm not going to expand on the point any more than that, but it does strike me that something is wrong with that set up.

Just seen your post.

The main point is that the manager doesn't mention new signings.  In fact, Spurs don't have a manager.  Jol is the Head Coach, responsible for 1st team squad and their results.  Of course he does have a say in identifying potential signings and does have the ultimate veto if he doesn't want a particular player in the squad, but it is Comolli's job to find the right person for a position.

The problems arise when Comolli is overruled by Levy.  My understanding of Bent's signing is that Jol, Comolli and Levy were all agreed that Spurs should sign Bent.  Comolli agreed a deal with Charlton for £8m rising to £10m.  West Ham blew agreement out of the water when they offered £17m and Charlton said he could only come to Spurs if we matched the Spanners' bid. Comolli said no,  Bent refused to talk to West Ham and went on holiday, Charlton said no talking to Bent until you offer £17m.   Jol said he still wanted Bent, Comolli said no more than £12m in his opinion so wanted to drop out and sign Anelka instead and Levy wanted Bent (as a young Englishman fitting in with our main buying strategy) but didn't want to pay that much.  In the end Levy agreed to pay £15.5 rising to £16.5m very much against Comolli's recommendation.

The Chairman's prerogative I suppose .  Levy knew he was paying over the odds but was getting a young English international whose value would appreciate in time and had the capability of stepping into Berbatov's boots if Man Utd eventually made a bid that couldn't be refused.  What Levy didn't know was that the price tag would be like a lead weight around Bent's neck.  In hindsight, Comolli was right, Levy and Jol were wrong.

It sounds to me like dividing the playing responsibility between two men allows the Chairman / Owner to exercise too much power. Divide and rule. You and Chelsea are paying the price for that.

Bayern got Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose for a combined total of 26million Euros this Summer, which works at around £18m.

Currently the most effective strike-force in Europe imo.

16 goals between them in 9 games.

Bent.

Nothing more than an average striker.

£6m for Smith is peanuts in todays market.

How much do you think Bent and Smith are worth in todays market?

i think smith would go for the same....

bent... omg... impossible... freebie? hehe

Bent probably scored more goals last year/the year before than Smith has in 3-4 seasons.

Bent imo is worth 8 to 10 million.

Smith.. much more close to what we payed for.. still pretty crap though.

Smith was not an improvement on Dyer.

still think 10mp is to much for bent, in jols situation (with so many strikers) and newcastles situation, where we really dont need him, i would have bought him for around 7-8mp... then i would have consideret it a bargain...

still cant belive they cashed out so much for him, silly money deluxe

Maybe, but the Chairman has the ultimate say no matter what, he's the man that signs the cheques at the end of the day.  Buying young and British is the philosophy introduced by Arnesen, and on every subsequent player sold Spurs have made a profit (in Carrick's case a huge one) so Levy won't deviate from that strategy until he makes a thumping loss.  Bent may be in time the one, we'll have to wait and see.

nani and anderson waste of money?

Nani has highest number of assists for us.

Anderson was not match fit, didn't have a preseason for us. What do you expect from a 19 year old from brazil coming to england? be world class from day one?

Nani and Anderson by the end of the season will have become very important part of united team.  :celb:

Yeh so average that he's the only striker bar Rooney, rvn, and Henry to hit 30 premiership goals in 2 seasons.  The sooner our manager realises that Berbatov and Bent are the strongest striking option weve got the better.

He is unstoppable on the right-flank. I've seen him make at least 4 assists and score once.

do you mean 30 over two seasons?

Shearer?Ferdinand?Hasselbaink?Owen?Cole?Yorke?Fowler? to name a few.

or 30 in each season?

in which case rooney has got nowhere near that.

I meant about his nationality. A young kid from brazil who played in portugal for less than 2 years, straight into england.

But I heard the same things about Ronaldo on these forums a couple of years back.

My my!! How that has changed!

Came from Portugal to be fair to him unless he took the scenic route.
