BBC reckon we could join G14 soon, which will be expanded to 77 members

Uefa president Michel Platini and the G14 body of top European clubs are close to a deal that will give the group more say in the game's running.

In the past, Platini has called for the G14 to disband, but the 18-strong group is now set to expand to 77 clubs and replace Uefa's European Club Forum.

"The big clubs consider the 102-strong club Forum is an ineffective talking shop," said 5 Live's Brian Alexander.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are all members of G14.

Chelsea are expected to turn down an invitation to join the group, but Newcastle, Spurs and Celtic could be new members.

Platini and the G14 group are due to meet on 21 December.

"The new organisation will be totally independent of Uefa and will have a real say on the contentious issues, such as player compensation while on international duty," added Alexander.

"It will also have a say on the establishment of an international fixture calendar that doesn't disrupt the domestic league seasons too much.

"Talks between Michel Platini and G14 general manager Kurth are ongoing but I understand a deal is not far off.

"The new organisation will represent a far bigger church of European clubs and will have a real say in how Uefa is run and makes decisions."

The G14 group has come into conflict with world governing body Fifa over its support for a number of court actions to gain compensation for players injured whilst on international duty.

Belgian club Charleroi have taken Fifa to the European Court of Justice over a player who was injured while on international duty.

Charleroi want compensation after Abdelmajid Oulmers was ruled out for eight months after being injured while on duty for Morocco.

The G14 is also seeking a share of the revenue generated by the Euro 2008 finals.

"We are hopeful of a deal with Uefa," said Kurth.

"We believe awarding the clubs a share of the revenue generated by the competition would recognise the contribution the clubs make to international football.

"It would not just be G14 clubs benefiting but all clubs with players in the finals.

"Hopefully this will be agreed before the start of the finals and could lead to a memorandum of understanding being signed next year."

Thats the first thing that jumped out at me as well. What gives the richest clubs in Europe a right to demand money from an INTERNATIONAL tournament? They are club sides with no rights in this area of the game other than the compensation issues for injured club players. Totally wrong.

possibly because its their employees that are running the risk of getting injured playing for their country. for examples of this see Englands Michael Owen. gets injured playuing for England, out for a year, yet Newcastle pay his wages. hardly fair is it??

Newcastle were compensated though. It's fair enough to demand compensation for an injured player but that's different to wanting proceeds from the tournament which is, as people have said, just pure greed. It might be different if it was getting ploughed into grassroots football / football development but the clubs in question are already the richest. Also, what about clubs whose players play in the Euros but aren't in the G14?

Their money goes to Man Utd. Obviously.

Surely defeats the purpose of the G14 if everybodys in it.

No, because it will now be a union of clubs, the first of its kind. It'll give football clubs a better chance of being a part of discussions about changes that can be made to the game because there'll be one and only one voice representing them all.

It's not representing them all though is it? What gives Manchester Utd any more right to demand how the game is run than Hartlepool Utd? They're both professional clubs operating in the same league system, they should be on a level playing field.

Agree totally. Another attempt by the 'bigger' clubs to bargain for MORE MONEY and control. They don't give a fuck about the good of the game in general...

This is what I've been whining about for a year and a half now.

Problem is you whine about a lot of things so it probably just got lost in the shuffle.  :coolsmiley:

But, eventually, it will give clubs such as Hartlepool a say in things. Do you not think that it is better that the membership has been increased? And not all 77 teams will be 'rich'. I can think of maybe about 7 teams in Premiership who are rich, maybe one or two in the Serie A, 3 or 4 in La Liga and then 2 (maybe) in the Bundesliga. That's about 20 or so teams who you could say are rich. The other 50 or so will be smaller teams. This is a good thing. At least it's a step in the right direction. And if we're a part of this, I'm happy.

These money grabbing parasites don't care about smaller clubs. They want all clubs in who pose a possible threat so it would make it easier to break away from the rest and destroy football, all for their greedy gains.

I'd disband it yesterday.
