sempuki
Bloody hell! Toon in new takeover talks? STEVE McMahon was today understood to be locked in talks with Newcastle United's hierarchy as a takeover seemingly edged closer. The former Liverpool midfielder was pictured in the St James's Park directors' box last night just days after the Singapore-based Profitable Group he is involved with was linked with a £260m takeover of Newcastle. United last night dismissed speculation that McMahon was there for talks on a buyout, and instead claimed McMahon was on Tyneside to advise the club on its Far East strategy. Owner Mike Ashley – who paid £130m for Newcastle last summer – has always denied he is keen to sell, but the billionaire admitted last month he is looking for investors to share the financial burden. However, a takeover is very much on the agenda, and the Gazette understands there have been hush-hush talks at the Copthorne Hotel on Newcastle's quayside over the past 24 hours. And should the Profitable Group – a global investment firm – take over United, then McMahon would be given a senior position at St James's Park. McMahon joined the firm as commercial director in charge of strategic sports investment earlier this year. The 46-year-old had spells as manager at Swindon Town and Blackpool after hanging up his boots.

Baggio
STEVE McMahon was today on Tyneside but insisted he is not here to negotiate buying Newcastle United. Speaking exclusively to the Chronicle from his Quayside hotel, he said he was only here to do a deal to promote the Magpies in the Far East. The former England international was in town with associates from the Singapore-based Profitable Group to watch the Toon’s clash with PSV Eindhoven last night. Profitable was rumoured at the weekend to be lining up a £260m bid to take over United. McMahon’s presence at St James’s Park served only to further fuel that speculation, with some reports suggesting he was going to be installed as director of football. But he today said: “We are forging a commercial tie-up with the club. “We are hoping to be a strategic partner of Newcastle United in the Far East. “I can categorically say I am not involved in buying the club and will not become director of football. “I would love to be. It would make good sense because there is always something happening there, but I am not. “What we want to do is turn Newcastle into Asia’s favourite club and if we were going to target any club outside of the top four, it would be Newcastle because of the history, the fan base and, like I said, there is always something happening here.” McMahon spoke to the Chronicle from the plush Copthorne hotel, where he was staying with Profitable Group colleagues John Nordmann, group operations director, and James Hodgson, group marketing manager. The trio said they were in the final stages of finalising a deal with Newcastle United to promote them, but refused to put a value on it. McMahon, who was set to leave Tyneside for Liverpool today before jetting back out to Singapore, said Profitable’s deal with the club would involve negotiating better sponsorship deals and raising its profile in the Far East. He said he had never met Mike Ashley, but said his dealings with United had been hindered by the speculation. Former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder McMahon said: “I have never met him. One of the reasons we came here was to meet a few more members of the club and put a few faces to a few names. “If anything, the speculation has put things back because we have had to cancel a couple of meetings with sponsors because of what’s been going on.” Mr Nordmann said: “Our job will be to increase the club’s profile and get United better commercial deals. “We will do our best to make the club better but buying it, no. “The reason we came here was because we were finalising our deal and we expected it to be completed in the next day or two, but then the stories came out. “It is not a big deal – it wouldn’t even buy you a full-back.” Reports at the weekend suggested the Profitable Group, which calls itself a strategic global investment company, were one of two firms lining up a bid for the Toon. Asian billionaire Anil Ambani, the sixth richest man in the world, was reported to be preparing a swoop through company Reliance Communications. But Ambani’s company released a statement saying they were not brokering a deal with Mike Ashley. A month ago Toon managing director Derek Llambias spoke out in criticism of repeated media takeover talk. He said: “At a time when everyone at Newcastle United is working hard to prepare for the new season ahead, it is annoying that we have to correct inaccurate stories.” http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/08/07/mcmahon-s-not-in-toon-to-buy-up-the-magpies-72703-21486045/
biggs
Mirrortastic hot off the press not one bit of evidence that i can make ot that he has spoken to them Exclusive: Mike Ashley says he is not selling Newcastle By Simon Bird 8/08/2008 Mike Ashley (PA) Mike Ashley (PA) Mike Ashley has broken his silence to insist Newcastle United is not for sale - and set Kevin Keegan a top-four target. The billionaire owner has bowed to pressure from fans and declared he has fallen in love with the club - and will not be selling his entire stake. Ashley has reacted to growing frustration over his lack of communication with supporters by producing a message aimed at giving the club stability ahead of the new season. He says the club's finances were a mess before he took charge with claims it could have collapsed like a pack of cards. He wants Keegan, who has a three-year contract, to take the club back into the top four, and is determined to break the club's trophy drought. Ashley has also defended appointing Dennis Wise (left) as director of football above Keegan, saying that they need experts to do transfer business and take that pressure off the boss. Advertisement - article continues below » The reclusive 45-year-old also attempts to end claims he will walk away from Newcastle with a profit on his £200million purchase. He told MirrorSport: "I'm really looking forward to the season. I'm excited by Kevin, seeing the team play, all of it. We're going to have fun." Ashley is in talks with the Profitable Group, but only to promote the club in the Far East. Ex-Liverpool star Steve McMahon said: "I am not involved in buying the club." Guest fraser
More speculation, and sorry if it's posted elsewhere, but I can't find it if it is. There's a small article in today's Telegraph concerning potential investment in NUFC (not a buy-out) by Michael Dell, of Dell Computers. Dell (the company) 'remain tight-lipped' about any conjectured meeting between Dell (the person) and Ashley.
