At least we got a fee and he's gone to a club in the Dutch top flight, ten years ago he'd have been down the road at Jarrow Roofing on a free. That's how it's going to be for a while though. At the minute we're trying to raise the overall level of our academy. It's brutal, but to @Pilko's point, we need to get to a point where our failed academy lads have EFL careers—whether that's after leaving us at 12-13 or 19-20. The fact we've managed to produce Lewis Miley during this period is a miracle. Now imagine Lewis in a much better team from 10 or 11-years-old. It changes things. The player(s) who make a big impact from our academy are currently in primary school. The ones we bring in from other clubs are likely not much older. Producing Miley and Anderson is probably a better hit rate than most academies outside Chelsea and City.

The talent is there in the region but generally it's either hamstrung by our lack of investment in years gone by or we're being beaten to players by Sunderland and Boro. It'll never top London but that's by the by. Now however, we're starting to supplement the North East spread by noncing on 14/15 year olds from down south, which means we should start to see more of a conveyor belt of talent spreading out across the leagues once we give them a loan then release jobby. Instead of Longstaff, Arma, Woodman being the exceptions, they'll likely be the norm if we keep investing, and all being well, there'll still be a pipeline for the local lower league teams to pick up the dregs. Charlie Robinson is the one. Edited yesterday at 08:20 by GEFAFWISP
