Getting unreasonably excited about us unearthing an entire fleet of talent at youth level in the vain hope that they’ll actually play and fire us to glory instead of being sacrificed at the altar of PSR

There's no point getting excited about anything any more lads, the steel mine's shut and we're on the scrapheap. And the exciting NUFC U18 players will end up playing for Gateshead or Blyth.

Finished 2-0. I think it’s largely gone unnoticed how well they’ve done this season (3rd in the North Group behind an ever dominant financially doped to the gills Man City and youth cup finalists Man Utd).
 

With that fantastic crop coming through in the U16s, hopefully a few of these will make the grade and begin to give us genuine options throughout the squad.

Almost feels like cheating to play Finneran in the under 18’s.

 

Anyway we have more players coming through now who have real potential for  the first team or at least making it at a decent level.

Not all of them will make it obviously, and we need to improve on where we send players for loans but that a good depth of potential.

Lorient coach Olivier Pantaloni has thrown some light on the ill-fated loan spell that Newcastle teenager Trevan Sanusi has endured in France this season.

"He arrived injured and it dragged on.Then, we mustn't forget that he's a young player, arriving from a foreign country, who doesn't speak the language. He found himself in a group that has been working together for a long time, with playing principles and training methods that are perhaps different from those at Newcastle. It was difficult for him. I think it's going to be difficult (for him to add to his five senior appearances). He's a kid who must have suffered from the situation. He's always persevered.

"If Newcastle took a chance on him, it's because they saw potential in him for the future. When you come from there, you want to play as much as possible. We didn't give him the opportunity because we felt he wasn't quite ready for Ligue 1."

 

A disappointing loan spell for Sanusi and at 19 you can't imagine him being in and around the first team squad next season if he wasn't classed as ready for Ligue 1.

There are mitigating factors though aren’t there? I don’t think we should give up on him. His injury hasn’t helped. At 19 there is still time for development.

I can see those - injury, new league/team and country so multiple adjusments. He will be competing with Park and Cordero so you'd think he will get another loan next season if they deem the U21 isn't going to challenge him enough. He has obviously shown glimpses to be in and around the first team two seasons ago - with a few minutes here and there.

I feel like most clubs have the same feeling. Loans are hard. It’s a big driver for bullshit like Chelsea-Strasbourg. Do you have any successful loans going on?

 

We’ve been criticising the club for loaning a Korean kid out to Coventry mid-season where he barely got a sniff. Yet others have had phenomenally successful loans this season. It’s not an exact science.

The logic behind Championship, Ligue Un, Eredivisie or the Belgian Pro League loans is sound as they're the closest in terms of physical demands to the PL.

 

Then it's a bit of luck, is the player actually any good/going to have a top level career or is it just a shop window and getting him minutes, and a ton of other variables.

 

That said, I'm of a view that in reality if you're not already in and around the first team at 17 or 18 it's highly unlikely you're going to "make it" at the club you're at, so loans after that point are more about proving these lads can play and will have a career, as much for their own well-being and future as well as the club making a few quid

I think us expecting Sanusi to get much game time in Ligue 1 when he's not near the matchday squad here was pretty naive

I’m coming round to the idea the most important thing is to get game time, and play regularly. Anderson’s loan spell to Bristol Rovers was criticised for not going to a good enough league, but it did wonders for his confidence and he was playing against men on a regular basis.

maybe looking down the pecking order is the way to go.

Agreed m the latter part, although the fact that keepers and CBs tend to develop a bit later can skew it a bit.

Yeah, after the takeover, and probably started by Ashworth when he was here, we seemed to start targeting kids in the 14-16 age bracket (no Saville).

 

The first one of them to seem like he might have chance of making the first team is Leo Shahar who nabbed from Wolves, who’s 19 now. Still tbc whether he’ll actually be good enough but hopefully there’s at least one or two who will eventually break through properly over the next 2-3 years.

The entire U21 loan infrastructure needs scrapped and rebuilt. I hope those quotes are embarrassing for the club internally.

I think some of it is our u21s are pretty useless, including the signings. I remember the furore about Kuol but there was no real evidence he was ever going to be good enough. Now if this kind of thing happens with the much more talented younger age groups this argument will have more merit.
