After watching his side achieve their seventh win in eight games, Academy Manager Joe Joyce hailed his Newcastle United under-18s for their performance against Middlesbrough.

Marcus Maddison, Adam Campbell and Will Turton struck to secure a 3-1 win at Rockliffe Park, and the likes of Ben Robinson, Brandon Miele and Michael Hoganson stepped into the side as Joyce gave an opportunity to some of his younger players.

And, after the match, a delighted Joyce told nufc.co.uk: "It was a good result and a good overall performance.

"The lads worked terrifically hard and it was very pleasing to see one or two of the younger players coming through again and stepping up to the mark.

"There were three schoolboys in there with Will Turton, Remie (Streete) and Adam Campbell. Will was playing in an unfamiliar position at right-back but looked strong defensively and I think we were all surprised, but delighted, when he stepped forward to score that third goal.

"The lads are bright, they're lively and they're good players. We have no qualms about throwing them into under-18s football - it's a good part of their development, and it was pleasing to see that there was a good blend in the team today.

Joyce added: "A couple of people came in who hadn't played for a while, like Michael Hoganson and Brandon Miele, and it was a very good team performance with some good individual performances too.

"You know you're going to get a good footballing game against Middlesbrough. Both teams tried to play the game right, there was good football from both sides, but I thought we had a bit more of a cutting edge."

Tavernier has had his loan at Gateshead extended until April.

Edmundsson has returned to Newcastle. Not sure whether that is because of injury or Gateshead not extending the loan.

Or in the circumstances we may have recalled him

£4 entry is making me have double thoughts about going to this one. Don't remember it being that expensive last year.

Squad: Soderberg, Mitchell, Newton, J.Henderson, Dummett, J.Smith, McLaughlin, R.Taylor, Mogwo, Knight, McDermott, Inman, Edmundsson, Ions, Sam Ameobi.
