Alan Shearer should not be criticised for trying

Absolutely super article!!

Its so well written and such thought and research added in. So refreshing.

Much better than this pathetic, bitter piece of bullshit!! : http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2009/0420/1224245022587.html

By 1943 the Civil War was in full swing and Hull came out in support of the Parliamentarians and banned Charles from visiting Hull. Parliament banned London coalships from sailing to Newcastle to collect more northeastern coal unless the city supported the Parliamentarians.

His grasp of history seems as good as his grasp of football.

"You have to love Sunderland. You have to root for them. Even if Big Niall wasnt there in his nice suit, the history alone is so appealing. Sunderland actually had coal. Newcastle never did. Sunderland used to use the Wear for exporting the coal they dug. So in 1610 the Royalists down the road at Newcastle got a royal charter to restrict the shipments of coal from many nearby ports, including Sunderland. At the time about 15,000 tonnes of coal was going from Sunderland to London every year. Now Sunderlands coal revenue was going to royalist merchants in Newcastle. And so Sunderland never really warmed to being a Royalist town in quite the same way that Newcastle did."

Hmm I'm pretty sure Newcastle did have plenty of coal - certainly there was an Elswick pit. Off topic slightly I know...

hideously inaccurate. there were dozens of pits in newcastle itself and more in surrounding northumberland and durham. sunderland also exported coal, only nowhere near as much as newcastle did. iirc the monopoly meant that coal had to be shipped from newcastle instead of gateshead or shields, but it only effected the tyne, not the wear.

He is trying everything like...

Shearer is using a therapist to give his players one-to-one talks in an attempt to boost their confidence ahead of Monday's crucial clash with fellow strugglers Portsmouth. (Daily Mirror)
