Sir Bobby Robson (1933–2009)

Recommended Posts

The defence in general under Bobby was largely nowhere near good enough to challenge for the title/top 4 and yet we did. Hughes, Griffin, Dabizas and O'Brien were often the back 4 in the CL with Steve Caldwell the only defender on the bench.

Will always say going for Bramble over giving Distin what he wanted was a big mistake. Would have been an unreal partner for Woodgate when he arrived.

What distin wanted at that time?

I don't recall it

Btw, Bramble can be very good at times, his problem is lack of concentration iirc.

Edit:

Ok, I mixed up distin and domi.

Such a long time ago 😅

Hughes was as good a right back as Dummett was a left back. I didn’t dislike Dummett by the way.

that Robson got these below-par players performing was testament on his management but he could have done so much more with a pair of full backs of a quality more in line with the rest of the squad.

imagine this current NUFC squad but with Krafth, Ashby, Dummett and Lewis as the full backs. That was what is was like under Robson

Ooof - I agree we didn't have an abundance of talent at the back under Robson, but Hughes was a pretty solid PL quality defender, and as good a RB as we've had below our A-Tier (Trippier, Livramento, Debuchy, Watson).
