Guest axel
Cahill has been good but he hasn't been that good. Vidic has been much better at the back with Rio. Vidic is from Kasakhstan or something. Not English.

Well by all means start a Serbian Form XI thread then. Zigic won't be in it that's for sure.

Guest marky555
Why are you all so hung up on English players? You're just a bunch of racists. Vidic is MUCH better than Michael Dawson, can you not see that through your St.Georges Cross glasses?

Guest
Best thread I could find to put it in, but very strong Under 21 squad for this summer by the looks of it, this is the provisional 40 which will be cut to 23...still surprised no Forster like. Fielding (Blackburn), Loach (Watford), Steele (Middlesbrough), McCarthy (Reading), Bennett (Middlesbrough), Bertrand (Chelsea), Gibbs (Arsenal), Jones (Blackburn), Mancienne (Chelsea), Mee (Manchester City), Naughton (Tottenham), Richards (Manchester City), Smalling (Manchester United), Tomkins (West Ham), Trippier (Manchester City), Walker (Tottenham), Albrighton (Aston Villa), Cork (Chelsea), Cleverley (Manchester United), Davies (Bolton), Hammill (Wolves), Henderson (Sunderland), Howson (Leeds), Lallana (Southampton), Lansbury (Arsenal), McEachran (Chelsea), Muamba (Bolton), Rodwell (Everton), Rose (Tottenham), Sinclair (Swansea), Wilshere (Arsenal), Carroll (Liverpool), Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Hooper (Celtic), Rodriguez (Burnley), Sears (West Ham), Sturridge (Chelsea), Vaughan (Everton), Welbeck (Manchester United), Wickham (Ipswich) GK - Loach RB - Richards LB - Gibbs CB - Jones CB - Smalling RM - Cleverley LM - Albrighton CM - Rodwell CM - Wilshere CF - Carroll CF - Sturridge

Guest
Farce that Carroll and Wilshere are in there. Will give them good tournament experience though heading in to Euro 2012. Muamba seems to be this crops version of Prutton like, no way in hell he'll ever be capped at senior level but always seems to be in the side. thenige
How is that a farce? Two players with limited international experience playing in an international tournament, seems fine to me.
ponsaelius
The 'tournament experience' thing is a fallacy IMO. The U21s are there as nothing more than a feeder to the full team, once they make it as full internationals then that should be that. No point in them dropping down a level once they've made it, this is all just ego-rubbing for Pearce who desperately wants to win the tournament. Nobody cares or remembers who wins these competitions.

Look at the team they picked which raped England's under 21s the year before a few of them (Ozil, etc) played in the World Cup and helped do the same thing to the senior squad. ponsaelius
How is that a farce? Two players with limited international experience playing in an international tournament, seems fine to me. Because it's pretty ridiculous that a full international starter (which Wilshere now is) is simultaneously playing for both teams. No other respectable country pulls this kind of nonsense. Anderson
I'm glad they're playing tbh, makes the thing more watchable. Infact watching that team probably interests me more than watching the current senior one.

Once they made it into the full team they don't drop back in though, do they? The likes of Oezil and Mueller are still eligible to play for U-21s, but they don't because they're starters for the full team. Germany brought a whole new generation through straight away, and failed to qualify this time. They don't care that they didn't qualify though, because the only success at U21 football is the number of players you can promote to the full team. ponsaelius
No other respectable top nation does this man. They push a generation through until they make it, and then move onto the next lot. We're pulling back players to play in the tournament even though they've already made it. Spain could have allsorts of ringers in here if they want, infact I'm sure the likes of Fabregas, Busquets etc could all be playing here if they wanted them too. It's just we're so short of good young players we're trying to pull in as many as possible so we don't feel outshone by the bigger nations. It's pathetic IMO and a large part of what is wrong with the set up we have in this country. Forget Wilshere, give the starting birth to McEachran. He needs gametime in an England shirt more than Wilshere does, Wilshere needs rest if anything.

An example of bringing an established international down a level just for this tournament would've been if we'd included people like Walcott or, if we'd have included Rooney in past U21 tournament squads. Also look at the teams the likes of Brazil & Argentina take to the Under 20 World Cups, Olympics, etc. All about getting young players out of the comfort zone of club football where it's all homey and into the environment of staying in a hotel for a month with the same people preparing for teams you don't generally face, learning what it's all about.
