Giving two free tickets to season ticket holders for forthcoming matches against West Ham and Swansea. They must be getting really desperate to fill the pink seats and make it look less empty.

We had about 3000 empty seats against Man City.

Bit of a difference giving two tickets to each ST holder..

If we did that we'd have around 75k people needing to get in.

Aye was just under 50K I think.

Mind a 12.45 kick off, on live TV, general mood of pessimism and City not selling their full allocation means it probably wasn't too bad.

Point is they're getting desperate down there, measures like shifting away fans, thousands of one pound tickets and now thousands of frees getting handed out all over the place, they really are doing anything they can to pad out a half empty stadium in order to keep up appearances for sponsors etc, a bit like desperate newspapers who are giving away more free copies than they're selling in order to keep the circulation audits respectable for advertisers.

They're not alone in that nowadays as most clubs are struggling to keep numbers up but I'd imagine they are much lower in the "gate receipt" table than they are in the "attendance" table and that's what really counts.

One particularly hard mackem strolling down Northumberland Street wearing a red and white scarf and sunderland training top with a red and white shirt poking from underneath.  Hats off to the lad of about 14 who stopped him, looked him in the eye with sincerity, informed him there was no party with Marty around here and in no uncertain terms told him to fuck off.

End of the world update from Sunderland -

Plagues of disheveled, pale-skinned, incoherent degenerates roaming the streets. Hygiene is a problem and people have taken to living in squalid conditions.

But if I see anything unusual I'll let you know.

Its a Mackem passage of honour- that story will be on Smb, The March on tha Toon. he would have battered half a dozen blokes on his way down, and everysingle man in Newcastle would have hidden in shop doorways from him.

Loads of em on an SMB thread claiming their away support (both historically and now) is bigger than ours. Priceless.

they are doing this because we had 50 thousand yesterday- and away fans are more difficult to measure- find statistics about.

they also bang on about pre 92 crowd bollox, but when you look at the 2o years before 92- we had higher averages, around 10k higher than them. and a few seasons in 70s and 80s we were 3rd best in country- even when in lower division.

Summary-Mackems lie about crowds to feel better.

Sunderland have had a higher average crowd than us 21 times since we were formed, two of those were in our first two seasons as a football club.  We've averaged more than them 88 times which includes this season so far.

That's fair enough Mick but you've not taken the North Sea into account, or death.

Good point, taking that into account, they've had a higher average crowd than us 21 times, we've had a higher average 88 times.

Love it when they refer to us as the 92ers like no one went to SJP pre-Keegan

Recently on some site, someone bothered their arse to do the stats and concluded that their gates have actually risen more percentage wise since 1992 than ours have  :kasper:

The main reason for that of course was the very low base level they were coming from, and the shiny new, cheap and nasty new flatpack stadium effect when their gates shot up. Judging from the vast open spaces down there lately and the desperation of the one pound and free ticket schemes their attendances could be back down to Roker Park levels before too long.

On the very first day of the Premier League, we had the highest attendance even though we were in Division 1 and had finished 5th bottom the previous season.

:smugdog:

never knew that stat, cant remember who we played? West ham? maybe- only missed bristol City at home that season the crowd was locked out by around 12-30.
