Ste
I think if he had proven to be a good manager over a number of years, then you could look past his personality and political views and make a strong argument for him being the right man to take a football club forward. The very most I would have given him would have been a deal until the summer, but that would only have been after chasing a load of other targets. Certainly wouldn't have been my first choice as he has been Short's. Serious doubts over him long-term, and clearly he isn't seen as just a quick fix as he does have a 2 year deal. Interesting 7 games ahead for them, it's quite a bold gamble but a necessary one after the awful timing of O'Neill's sacking. Very few, real options available to them. Skeletor
TBF though Souness did have a honey moon period. Didn't have any hard fixtures though really.
Guest Phil K
First picture of Di Canio taking training at the Academy Of Light and he is leading from the front. Now this is more like it. We take the p*ss and sneer. THAT is what we should be doing, not getting on our high horses and pontificating. This is a Godsend. An opportunity to have fun at our friends down the roads expense. Tiresias
Don't remember that many stories of people being put to death during Spain's 39 years of Fascist rule. Franco turned the country round in fact. DiCanio - just when you didn't think RTG couldn't get any stupider...
WarrenBartonCentrePartin
I've no doubt when they haul their sweaty, smelly, unwashed carcass' into level 7 in just under 2 weeks time, a fair proportion of them will raise their right hand at him. They're stupid enough.

PolPot on the other hand....Leftie fascists. No style. Mountain of skulls time. But I wasn't aware DiCanio was in the process of organizing a red and white army assault with tanks and Russian-made fighters etc. Aren't some of us getting a teensy weensie bit carried away, here ? Crumpy Gunt
Miliband....the man who spent LOTS of public money to get NON-British terrorists released from Guantanamo has the gall to lecture others about extremist views ? Don't like DiCanio, but the ridiculous over the top reaction to his politics has amazed me. Big sodding deal. He's manager of the makems, that does for me, in regards not liking. As for his falling out with players, maybe thats what his players need. He doesn't tolerate slackers, which Sunderland (and us, TBF) have a great many of. I couldn't give a toss what DiCanio's politics are. And baffled why others should. I'm happy for his fascist past to catch up and bite him on the arse. Agree, but TBH he didn't do badly at Swindon, but I got the impression that he'd been sounded out a month or so back, as he resigned at Swindon, as if he'd got word that something like Sunderland was in the offing. Well, we'll see. Loads of ammo for us to fire at him. Interesting to see how he reacts. It's going to be VERY interesting
Guest JS
Looks to me like under O'Neill they'd lost the spirit and with 2 away games to Chelsea and us, they'd possibly have lost them with a whimper, lowering confidence further and staring relegation in the face. They have a limited squad, that cant score goals. With Flectcher out, it gets harder. Di Canio is a "blood and thunder" type appointment. I reckon it could keep them up in the short term- with their next 2 fixtures surely they have more of a chance of breaking the downward spiral with a fascist nutjob laying into them then a stale O'Neill? For the next 7 games or so, it could be a good decision. If the fact that although he may not have the managerial experience, hes a total mentalist can spur the players on to blag enough points to stay up, it will have been a good decision. If they stay up and he fails miserably next season, hes only on a 2.5 year contract and wont cost much to sack, compared with the premier league money. Tough to call this one- but thinking about it, the madness might make sense in the short term. This is the gut feeling that I got, sadly. I worry about the derby slightly - I think he's a massive kick up the arse they need in the very short term. So.. the Marty Party has finished and now they're off to the Di Canio Disco? Amazing. Didn't think I'd need another reason to hate Sunderland, but this Lazio loving fascist bell end is the icing on the cake I'll be celebrating hard if they get relegated with this clown

Fascism is violently opposed to socialism and communism, along with liberalism and liberal democracy. You seem to be confusing fascism with totalitarianism, which is indeed a policy shared by both the extreme right and extreme left.

I couldn't give a toss what DiCanio's politics are. And baffled why others should. You're baffled why people give a toss about having a high profile fascist in our region/anywhere? If you don't have a problem with fascism then you're part of the problem, tbh. I'm part of the problem, am I ? Idiot. What IS "Fascism" ? The term started with Mussolini who used Ancient Rome's "fascii" which the Consul's Guards (Lichtors) used to bash anyone who was a threat. Therefore "fascism" Gang mentality against others (You're either with us or against us) Like YOU have just displayed, you silly little boy DiCanio isn't a likeable bloke. So what. Big deal. His views aren't mine. Why do they need to be ? Wow. I don't even know where to begin with just how incorrect and instantly contradictory that is. Actually, I do. Fascism is not about the original definition of the work. That's school boy politics and is exactly the same kind of shit, baseless excuse that people use to get away with saying things like "Paki is an abbreviation and Chinkie is a type of food" To use Facism in exact contradiction to the point that you're making about gang mentality and me being against that is the same thing. Actually, that's exactly wrong. Fascism is about the removal of democracy (the exact thing that's allowing you to make your point and me make mine without either of us being arrested for being too left or too right) So yes, you are part of the problem, because this isn't about which one of us is right, it's about both of us having the right to discuss it. Refrain from petty insults if you're going to discuss this as well please. I don't think there's any need for it at our age.
Thespence
Di Canio is a "blood and thunder" type appointment. Look at at their players I get the feeling a prizeprick McClean and Gardner will thrive under "blood and thunder" while Johnson and Sess may crumble under it.
