A quick question for the foreigners....

We get something called Sky Sports in Ireland.

Most of the pundits seem pretty thick and don't really understand the meaning as far as I've seen.

Unless you're somehow joking or something, don't you know that Skysports is in the Uk too and not just Ireland? Sure he was asking what foreign channels and other media say not British ones, like skysports.

But nothing special gets mentioned about it over here there is no big emphases on it at all and is no where near as much hype as clashes such as the 'big four' clashes. No history lessons or the likes of it, in fact it's just seen as a ordinary match if you're honest and no one other than me and maybe other Irish Nufc fans gives two f*cks about it over here.

South Africa

The EPL gets huge coverage on pay-per-view. You get as much live games as you can watch, with the rest shown later in the evening.

From inception till about two years ago the pay-per-view provider supplied their own studio guests for EPL games. They generally consisted of a combination of ex-internationals who also plied their trade in the UK. Gary Bailey (ex ManU keeper); Terry Paine (ex RB for S'hampton and part of the 1966 WC winning squad), Shaun Bartlett (ex striker for Charlton) and Andre Arendse (ex Oxford, Fulham keeper) and occassionally John Barnes or Gary Mabbutt would appear when they in the country. These guys would be left to explain the nature of the derby to the viewers. They go through the same cliches each year and give the impression that they are excited, but they would not grab the attention of any neutral looking for a good game on the telly. Their excitement is reserved for ManU, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea games (which are always "live"). Pandering to the masses.

The situation right now is that the feed comes directly from a UK broadcaster (not sure which one). So this includes the match build up, studio guests, commentary, post match interviews, etc. Not sure who the host is, but the studio guests are usually a selection of Andy Townsend, Alan Curbishley(seems to love it lounging in the studio), Gareth Southgate, etc.

Which UK broadcaster are we getting then? Sky? ITV?

That sounds like the ITV wankers, but they don't get any Premier League coverage in the UK, only Champions League really.

If you dont have pay-per-view here then you might as well sell your TV set. The national broadcaster shows no live overseas football whatsoever, except for World Cups. They will broadcast local football but thats pure torture to watch. There is a free-to-air channel that plays two CL games per week. One delayed and one live and to cater for the masses, it is usually the UK teams versus whomever.

The pay-per-view provider has for years monopolised the industry and bought the rights to live football from all the big leagues (EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Lique 1, South American Leagues, plus a seperate feed from ESPN which shows the MSL). This includes FA Cup, Carling Cup, Champions League, Europa League, etc. You can watch live football on the telly from the afternoon till past midnight (catching the late La Liga game).

So if you wanna watch these games you have to shell out for over-priced hardware and installation costs and pay the rather steep monthly fees with its annual unsubstantiated increase.

If it's on ESPN and we get Ian Darke / Steve McManaman commenting you'll hear a bit about it - no history lesson on the centuries of hatred but more on the football.

If it's on Fox Soccer Channel we'll get Warren Barton with some obviously biased views and not much else.

I think Warren goes to great efforts to seem unbiased and IMO largely succeeds. Shaka Hislop on the other hand... loved his commentary on the West Brom game for ESPN 3. Pretty much just talked about our players and what they needed to do better and what they did well. At the end of the game, Shaka says: "Well that was a very dissapointing result..." "uh Shaka, we are supposed to be unbiased here." Shaka: "I never prentended to be neutral here, that is your role, I always want Newcastle to win."

As far as covering the history of the derby: no. They just say it is one and its important without real explanation.

I'm not criticising Warren, to be fair to him, it's always apparent he was a former NUFC player and he has a interest in Newcastle winning. It's a significant step up from Lawro/Phil Thompson/Hansen who are all massively biased towards Liverpool, but without admitting that they're swayed by their former team.
