I always thought it was down to the discretion of the Ref at the time of the match - if he thinks there's a clash, he makes them wear a different kit, or borrow the home teams change shirt/kit if there is still a clash? Strange of them to do that, you'd think that they'd started production so it would be too late for a design change, much nicer mind.
