What was the performance like? Did we deserve the victory? Look like a team?

First half was largely shite, and we were lucky not to concede. Couldn't make the ball stick up top, or retain possession in the slightest. Much better in the second half, largely down to the introduction of Shola. Bringing Hatem on at 70 mins killed them off.

Looked like a team that had never played together, which, to be fair, they hadn't. Very shaky from set pieces. Encouragingly, we seemed to get stronger as the game went on. No obvious signs of tiredness.

I'll let someone come along and contradict all that now.

Not going to contradict you as such, but I thought we were really poor again. Save for one or two individuals, there was no real desire across the team and there was no discernible game-plan either (hoofball aside). Saying we got 'stronger as the game went on' is true but it doesn't really tell the story. We played at their level for 70 minutes until we exploited their fatigue with a couple moments of Premier League quality. Pretty standard, unspectacular cup performance, but I just wish we'd be good once in a while.

Went about the game in professional manner and got through with minimal fuss or damage. Nice to finally get a home tie which should be a good game. Last night is now over and done with, achieved the main target, now for Saturday.

At least the fitness was there, which hasn't always been the case in the past even against lower league opposition.

They tired badly around the hour mark and we took advantage, so we produced about the minimum you have to look for in these sorts of games.

Don't think it was manifestly different from the vast majority of our excursions against lower league opposition for the last few years:

Never especially convincing or dominant, but this time the lower league opposition didn't have the extra quality (or luck) to punish us when they were on top, so we didn't have to chase the game/become really desperate in the second half - which meant our subs came on and played with a bit more freedom, which got us some goals.

Sammy, Dummett, Shola (fluffed chance aside) and HBA had noteworthy performances (against Morecambe, yes, but last night it was what they had in front of them).

Considering that out of the team starting, only Debuchy would make our strongest starting XI, (ok shouts for Gouffran and MYM possibly) they did quite well.  They were roughed up a bit in the beginning - pretty much as you'd expect from any 4th division team playing in front of the biggest crowd they'll get all season.

We lacked cohesion and cutting edge (sounds familiar) but showed plenty of character and gradually took over the game and scored two good goals.

Just incredible that we aren't waking up to giant-killing headlines TBH. The sense of disappointment on the radio last night was palpable.

Didn't sound a great performance but we got the job done. As people have said, it would be nice to play well sometimes, but games like this probably aren't the time we're most likely to do it.

The first half we were drawn into a physical battle which we lost but Morecambe had no one who could finish. Second half they tired and we managed to hold the ball a bit better. We didn't look like a team at any point, it was just random individuals doing their own thing as they saw fit. It was a rank performance but we got a decent result at the end of it.

A fair few of our fans actually wanted those headlines, that's the worrying thing.

I think most fans just want us to look like a decent premier football team that can pass the ball around a bit.

Most fans would have been happy with that, understand last nights performance once again disappointed them, not arguing against that. However before the game were some fans talking up a loss just to increase the chances of Pardew out.

Sky had their agenda prepared in advance too and stuck to it firmly, but hey everyone loves a giant killing story.

It's not just national broadcasters, some local outlets have their Newcastle agenda too and they're sticking to it come what may.

 you don't honestly think that do you? We were absolutely horrific and should have been two down at half time

Think what?

Professional manner: We kept our heads when they were trying to make us lose ours.

Minimal fuss: Was never really a point where you're thinking we are going out here.

Minimal damage: Nobody came out the game injured or lacking fitness.

Target achieved: Get through to next round

Nice home tie: Opposition is Leeds

Yeah I think all that actually.....

Sometimes people that are optimistic, forget that the glass is half full of toxic waste.

Nobody will forget we still have Ashley as owner, that's the toxic waste.

As are Pardew and Kinnear. As are Carver and Stone to an extent.

Pretty accurate summing up of the game, that.

Like Sky commentary this, 'Newcastle under siege', fuck off they've had two corners man in 10 minutes, calm down! They were desperate for a Morecambe goal! Some of the reactions on here is like you were.

End of the day we've came through a potential upset. Whilst we were boarding the bus back home, Everton were still struggling at home to lower league side, they can be difficult nights. Second half we were in control of the game and i was never really thinking ‘well we aren't in the next round’ at any point.

Professional in the manner they dominated us for most of the game?

Minimum fuss in that most of the game it felt we might go out we didn't score until the 87 minute?

Did they fuck, man. I'm sure this will become fact by the end of the week, but it just didn't happen. First half, yes, they were much better than us. But that was more down to their physicality and desire, than us being outplayed. Second half, they barely threatened.

The issue is that this isn't an isolated incident. This is all part of a larger picture in which we are a very poor Premier League side that doesn't need to be and absolutely shouldn't be. There will always be cup upsets, it's what happens.

The point is more that our entire sorry existence at the moment feels like an upset for us as fans, but the media are only interesting in twisting the knife where there's a one-off incident or high-drama. Us being a shit football team over an extended period doesn't figure in their 'soap drama' story about us, yet it makes up the vast majority of what we care about.
