Just noticed that he's the first Newcastle manager to reach the CL twice with us. Outside of the one time we reached CL in the 90s, we somehow had a 2nd and a 3rd place finish with both resulting in the Europa League? How did that happen? I was born in the 90s, so I don't have a clue.

We lost in the qualifiers to Partizan Belgrade. Won 0-1 over there, lost 0-1 here and then lost on pens. Sickna.

Edit: Sorry thought you meant under Robson. Maybe the 90’s was to do with only first place qualifying? Unsure.

I recall we finished 2nd 2 years in a row. Once under Keegan, once under Dalglish...

Is he not asking how finishing 2nd under Keegan in 96 only got us UEFA Cup and finishing 2nd the next season under Dalglish got us CL?

Aye, I didn’t twig until I reread it

Yeah, it doesn't say anything about qualifying rounds either on wikipedia. Just 2nd and 3rd, and then Europa League next season. We did get into the CL with a second place finish in 96/97.

Keegan finished top 3 twice without getting us into the CL, so the comparison is a bit unfair as we finished 5th this season.

Yes. However only one of those times we didn't get CL. The other time we did. My wording was just a little confusing, I didn't mean to say that we finished 2nd only once.

Due to the Heysel ban there was no European football for english clubs until 92 and then only 1 place because the coefficient was so low. It increased slowly but we only got 4 places in 2001.

Fucking scousers.

Just read about it after your post. Without knowing all the context, it seems wild to collectively punish the entire PL for it.

They are very fortunate Howe managed to achieve what he did this season imo. Think a lot more questions would have been asked about them this summer if not.

Absolutely nothing to do with coefficients - only champions qualified for the European Cup (or ‘Champions League’) until the 1996/97 season regardless of which league you were in.  After the Heysel ban English football got four European slots - 1 for the European Cup (standard with everywhere else), 1 for the Cup Winners Cup (again standard), 2 for the UEFA Cup (one went to the LC winners).  In 1996/97 for the first time runners-up were allowed into the tournament - which still strikes me as being a right load of bollocks.

After that, the numbers increased gradually to four.

Howe becoming the first manager to do this isn’t really one of note - Howe hasn’t faced qualifiers, and had the fifth placed team been allowed in Robson would’ve added a third qualification; KK would’ve qualified twice under the current rules.

I agree with the last part, and said so myself. I was just a bit surprised by the fact that we only qualified twice through those 10 years or so. Not qualifying with second place seems brutal, and I had no idea that was a thing.

I guess it’ll seem odd these days :) - but for the first 40 years of the European Cup / Champions League it was for champions only (they didn’t drop ‘champions’ from the name in 1996/97 like they should have).

It used to be interesting - Eastern European clubs were competitive, and most nations got a slot in the tournament proper.  Real Madrid went over three decades without winning it - it’s a bore fest these days, with the same handful of clubs winning it over and over again, unless they’re propped up by oil money (PSG, Man City).  The change to the ‘Champions League’ destroyed much of European football.

edit: runners-up (and after that 3rd and 4th placed teams) were added to stave off the threat of a ‘European Super League’ by the petulant ‘big clubs’.  They resented having to actually win the league to qualify.  That threat has been around for decades …

I’ve said this before but don’t expect any favours from Saudi League clubs. In my experience, a lot of the time companies under the PIF banner are competing against each other for attention and funds.

Aye which is also why the other European competitions have been devalued.

Real Madrid won the UEFA Cup 2 or 3 times. in those decades theyd didn't win the European Cup. At the time, some of the best teams in Europe played in the UEFA Cup. Barcelona won the Cup Winners Cup several times.

I don't think Real Madrid have played in the UEFA Cup/Europa League in the last 30 years.

Growing up in the 70’s/80’s I loved the European competions. Watching the highlights on sportsnight. Loved the jeapordy of straight knockout. No chance you’d get a Forest/Malmo final these days or Bucharest being champions, for a variety of reasons. Everything is geared towards keeping the big boys happy. It’s shite
