Only Wilson's fluffed chance and Joelinton's header were big chances for me. Everything else you've listed there were from the first match and were half chances, which is the least you'd expect from us at home. It doesn't factor in the chances they spurned, either.

I don't see it as that controversial to say that we've been tactically outdone in both ties tbh. Not embarrassed by any stretch, obviously, but in both games we've looked like newcomers to the competition.

I just disagree basically. I don't think those other chances were half chances (particularly the clear pen not being given) or that we were outdone tactically. I just don't see it at all, I see fine margins and needing a bit of luck.

Fair enough, we'll agree to disagree. I thought they stifled us better than any other team this season, notwithstanding our own stinking performance at Brighton (and I can't remember Man City ).

See I thought Brighton were the team that did a number on us despite us not doing a huge amount wrong. They were fantastic tactically, as were Man City. BD didn't feel like a tactical downfall, but yeah agree to disagree

I guess the question is, were we tactically outdone, or did they ultimately just have more experience and quality on the pitch? Or a bit of both?

Sometimes as well, you just don't play well. I thought there was a bit of that first game v Dortmund as well.

It's a weird one , literally nobody has done Eddie over two games like Dortmund have and I don't even think they are that good. They will probably get to the second round / quarters at best , even an awful Chelsea team knocked them out last season, is just one of them things . No blame at all on Eddie for me .

I kind of feel they beat us the way we beat arsenal, player for player arsenal are clearly superior, but we nullified them and played to our strengths, won it physically etc

Feel the reverse is true for dortmund

We tend to defend with a flat row of five midfielders (when not pressing high) I think when we look vulnerable when teams get players into that pocket of space that's left between defence and midfield.

Dortmund kept getting 2/3 even four players in that area and that causes chaos. It wasn't just one striker dropping deep or one AM getting up there.

Think at the top level, when teams are technically excellent it's harder to stop them playing through like that. The press isn't generally as effective against really good technical teams and we just don't have the energy to do it as well with so many games and injuries.

It's where a real specialist DM dropping deep may help. Or maybe a shift to a more 4231 formation at times to plug that space a bit with 2 CMs and allow us to have one midfielder a bit higher up to support the striker when we play out.

Plus I do think our squad just hasn't been built up yet to include enough really top level technical players so there is that disadvantage to overcome as well.

I'm sure we'll evolve and improve any way.

God I wish we had all our players available.

This talk of him being tactically outdone is just so baffling.

Some people seem weirdly keen to say that Eddie has been out-thought, outdone or whatever every time we lose.

Since last season, some people seem to have trouble accepting that sometimes we will lose some games and it can be down to something simple like having loads of injuries. Always has to be some nonsense about us being 'found out' or 'out of our depth'. At full strength and with a bit of luck, these 2 games would have been so different.

I think it's a bit simplistic to say Eddie was done twice. He doesn't use it as an excuse but all the injuries and the load the fit players carry is taking it's toll. You could have a perfect tactical plan but it won't work if the players are not performing on their expected level due to tiredness or possibly the lowered quality in available players (this is not directed at any single player directly). And intensity is our identity but demanding that level two times a week is not really realistic right now with all the injuries.

Eddie probably could've rotated more when we had more players fit (although many injuries have been just bad luck and not due to excessive load) but I'm not blaming him for anything and this schedule is a a learning experience for him too.

Well, nah, that suggests an agenda. It's just an observation on this occasion, I'm not rushing to be negative or contrarian. I just think we've faced an opponent with a very effective gameplan and fair play to them for that. In both matches they mostly prevented us from doing the things that make us so dangerous in most other games. It was more evident at SJP than tonight, where the defeat was equally to do with our limited options.

Yeah, it's pretty strange, and I can't imagine what the thinking behind it is really.

The "thinking behind it" is observing a game of football and having a, presumably unpopular, opinion about it.

But you know Eddie himself will be thinking ... why did it go wrong? What could we have done better? That's why he's awesome.

I’m behind Eddie all the way, I just hope one of the conclusions he comes to is that we need to look at finding someone to link midfield with attack, even if it means altering the way we play slightly. If there’s one criticism of this season, there’s been too many spells of 30-45 mins where we’ve been a nonentity going forward. Obviously we’ve scored a lot of goals in the league through intensity alone but there’s limits to who that works against.

Speaks really well as always but that's about a downbeat as I recall seeing him. Seems shattered and a bit gutted. Clearly really frustrated at the injuries as well.

Don't think we were outdone tactically necessarily just the limitations of some of our players are exposed when we can't/don't play with full intensity.

Dortmund did a good job exploiting our weaknesses I'd say but don't think Eddie got a lot wrong. Technically our midfield is pretty poor for Champions league level Bruno aside. If teams can match us physically and press us well we're always liable to struggle.

He knows with a full fit squad we would have won that.

Put it this way, if we played Dortmund on Saturday how would we have done? Had we gotten a chance to have Botman, Isak, Barnes and Tonali would it be better? We’re reeling right now because our thin squad is even thinner. Add to that we’re playing a seasoned side in CL and honestly think we’ve 100% not looked ourselves in both matches.

Thats gotta be why Eddie is down. Hes disappointed and upset. His coaching can only go so far but he’s not had his full team or his game changers to battle Dortmund. He had his best striker v Paris tho.

Where would this team finish in the Premier League if managed by Eddie?

  Barnes.         Isak.           Murphy

Anderson     Tonali.         Longstaff

Targett   Burn.    Botman.    Manquillo

                    Dubravka
