How would you rank the current PL Managers?

Recommended Posts

Howe is definitely top 5 and top 2 in defensive phase. What he did last season without Botman (who is by far your best defender) is extraordinary and something you rarely see in Premier League.

I watched Arsenal vs. Leeds and was shocked by the Leeds defense's positioning...their defensive phase simply does not exist and it's not a matter of good players. It seems like their manager told them "do as you like"...absurd.

Updated list below for me:

Tier 1: Pep

Tier 2: Emery / Arteta

Tier 3: Howe / Ange / Iraola / Slot / McKenna / Glasner

Tier 4: ETH / Frank / Silva / O’Neil / Dyche / Maresca

Tier 5: Nuno / Cooper / Martin / Lopetegui

Tier 6:

Unknown - Hurzeler (not seen any of his sides)

Not many changes in my view, as season goes on, should see some movement as the newer guys are another season in, and the lower tiers have been around so could bottom out or actually show something innovative.

Updated current Prem managers for me based on my criteria:

Tier 1 = Elite. Coaches that vastly improve players because of the system they coach, with top end results to back.

Tier 2 = Strong. Clear showings they are innovative, with recognition that can push the top guys.

Tier 3 = Very good. Good coaches, have their identity that can be seen, and got room to move upwards.

Tier 4 = Steady. What you’ve seen is what you get. Never going to get to Tier 2, only possibly considered higher due to managing in inferior leagues with superior squads to mask their fundamental errors.

Tier 5 = Bounce between 4 and 5. Not a great deal of appeal.

Tier 6 = Out of depth.

Tier 1: Pep / Arteta

Tier 2: Emery / Howe

Tier 3: Iraola / Slot / Glasner / Moyes

Tier 4: Silva / Rosenior / Farke / Regis Le Bris / Hurtzler

Tier 5: Frank / Andrews / Nuno / Dyche

Tier 6: Parker / Edwards

Feels like to me the ones in Tier 3 is the highest they will go, Iraola the exception. Slot, I really do think is a a bang average coach where it just all aligned for him last season (strong settled side that knew their roles with Salah in Balon d’Or form).

Emphasis to me that within the league, we do have the best manager we can get of the bunch. Howe does have his limitations, but shown more answers and adjustments than others below him.

Think it’s becoming more and more obvious why matters most is a clubs leadership rather than individual managers.

Frank had years of ‘he’s a brilliant coach’. He left one of the best setups in the PL, to join a club with money but no identity or drive and is floundering. His replacement was no great shakes in previous managerial roles but within the Brentford environment is flourishing.

We view Howe as elite (and I’m a Howe loyalist - didn’t waiver an inch last month) but a lot of that is down to the great support and environment Staveley setup.

I think there’s a lot of really talented managers in the league. What matters more is how they are supported.
