Altidore's been a key part of the starting XI since Klinsmann arrived (and he's generally played well for the U.S.), whereas Donovan has drifted in-n-out of the U.S. team and half-assed his way through games. Even if Donovan had made the 23-man, he wouldn't have started, and especially not over Altidore at CF. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with the decision, but I understand where it comes from. Not only has Donovan not been playing well at club level, he genuinely seems to not give a shit anymore. He basically came out and said as much a few weeks ago.
