If I was a PL team in need of a left winger, Barnes would be very high up on my list.

Let's face it, if we didn't have Gordon, Barnes would be starting every game for us without question.

Not sure about this. He's probably not quite what the top 6 are looking for and then can those below that afford his fee?

Think it should be Dub moved on for a nominal fee, Trippier £0 and Almiron for any fee above £5m and that’s us ok.

And if we want to make a significant signing in January, it’s sell Barnes. Be proper short term (and dumb) of us to sign someone in January knowing we need to sell before end of June, and the buyers not there because they know the crack.

A loan with option to buy feels a best placed moved in January, which means Barnes can stay, and if we can sell him end of season it allows it to be triggered. If not, it doesn’t impact us, but means paying slightly more to make it permanent in next years accounts.

Villa, Brentford, Fulham, Bournemouth, West Ham.

Villa no.

Brentford no.

Fulham. Unlikely imo they spent a stack this summer.

Bournemouth maybe?

West ham also spent this summer and aren't really playing for anything this season.

No for the first two based on what exactly?

And for Fulham and West Ham what makes you think they have no more room to spend?

Villa do not need him also have ffp issues. And he doesn't for Brentfords profile he is expensive fee wise as well as on a decent wage.

Villa were apparently looking at him around the time we signed him. They currently use McGinn and Ramsey on that side. I could see them signing Barnes. They don't really have a left winger, which is one of their issues.

Brentford are comfortably established in the Prem now. They spent £30 million on an unproven Brazilian striker from Belgium this past summer. Barnes is on around the same as what they pay Aaron Hickey from what I can see, so not beyond the realms of possibility.

Villa have Ramsay Mcginn Buendia Bailey and Rodgers I think they have enough personally also they are in ffp hell with us

as for Brentford the package would crazy expensive for them established or not. I really don't see a world where they buy him but I could be wrong obviously.

Rogers plays just behind Watkins. None of those others are really left wingers, and none have had close to the production Barnes has had down that side.

I think you underestimate what Barnes has been able to contribute in goals and assists in the Premier league, even when he was at Leicester.

If we make him available we'll see. I'm certain there will be interest. Perhaps some of the clubs even battling to stay up would see him as a big signing that gets them over the line.

Time will tell.

Could see Fulham or West Ham being interested in him. Don't think Villa, Bournemouth or Brentford (unless they sell one of or don't think its worthwhile to continue betting on Schade and Lewis-Potter to come good) would be interested or needing him.

That being said, I want us to have a squad with competition for places, so ideally he'll stay here.

I just think hes a really expensive option for a mid table side and his all around game isn't quite good enough for the top sides.

No doubt about his record, I rate him as well just think his price plus wages and limitations make him a tricky proposition.

Yeah we’re not buying anyone for at least the next two windows without major sales

West Ham for Barnes if they decide to cash in on Kudus I reckon.

That's fair enough. I do think if he was playing week in week out he'd benefit, and his all around game wouldn't be looked at as poorly.

The options Villa use there currently got example all are kind of bring shoehorned in there, and aren't as good.

It'll be interesting to see what happens but I think clubs will come in for him.

Fulham have Reiss Nelson, who I'm sure they would rather turn into a permanent buy than sign Barnes. None of the other clubs listed by Kaka would come in for him, except West Ham and that would be dependent on Kudus leaving.

Leeds coming up I could see them dropping £35m on him, because he's a goal scorer that they will need. Outside that, it depends on clubs losing a player to then sign Barnes.

If we lose money on Barnes by selling, then don't sell. He gives us plenty when he does get a chance.

Issue though, we need to move someone on to be able to manoeuvre a bit more in the market. Breaks down to the below for me:

Players you don't want to sell, unless it's an insanely daft offer: Botman, Tino, Hall, Bruno, Tonali, Miley, Gordon, Isak

Players you sell if the offer is reasonable: Joelinton, Barnes, Longstaff, Willock

Players of minimal value that you happily sell, but bring in fuck all: Dubs, Pope, Greek Guy, Burn, Schar, Krafth, Trippier, Kelly, Targett, Almiron, Murphy, Wilson

Basically four players to focus on, one of which has signed a new beasty contract, one who's nearing end of a contract, one who's injury prone for past 18 months and then Barnes.

Is this selling Barnes thing a theoretically discussion to generate PSR cash to allow us to fund two positions we need instead of being over stock on the left? Or is there actual noises of him wanting to leave or we want to sell?

I absolutely don't want him sold. Miggy needs to go, Murphy can be back up and hopefully another window a youth player or signing can be winger can be competing one to our next main person. Happy with Gordon and Barnes chipping in on right when needs must.

Barnes is goals, even if mostly a sub. Don't want to sell.

Douglas in his piece yesterday suggested he could be available in January.

The Barnes deal never made much sense to me unless Howe had doubts about Gordon at the time.

But saying that, aside from Isak and Wilson, he's the best finisher at the club. He's at a good age and with a run of form and goals his value could or should be higher.
