It's not like Thiaw isn't prone to the odd clanger and the other issue I have with him is that none of our other CBs look all that comfortable playing alongside him, although that's maybe a slightly harsh take as Botman and Schar have had injury problems. When I talk about a defensive blueprint for us I'd always refer back to the 22/23 season. We had the best defensive record in the league that year conceding 33 goals in 38 games. Botman and Schar were incredible as a CB pairing that season, both playing 41 games in all competitions. He hasn't got anywhere near to the level they played at that season so far in his time here. Trippier was at his best. Burn was solid and acted like a 3rd CB. Joe’s Locked down the left, Almiron defended well. Pope was imperious etc. I agree we’ve never looked solid with Thiaw (and that worries me) but it’s a wider problem

I think some of his clangers can be put down to the amount of defending he had to do this season, much of which was last ditch. A more organised defence makes for fewer errors. Obviously some of them were individual mistakes but he played virtually every game and had zero protection all season. Put him in an Arsenal team and I reckon he'd look absolutely top drawer. All I can go off is what I've seen with my own eyes this season and whilst I agree with what you're saying there, although he's made some other unenforced errors as well, I can see why he's not first choice for Germany. Risky business saying that you assess players with your own eyes these days. Sliding your hand into a nest full of stat vipers.

Hopefully we get to see him with a bit more protection next season. There's a top player in there. I can also see why he doesn't start for Germany though - Rudiger, Tah and Schlotterbeck are top performers, more experienced at international level and they all play for top clubs. It's not a difficult decision
