Guest nufc_geordie
Lerner outlines vision for Villa Aston Villa chairman Randy Lerner Lerner has backed boss Martin O'Neill with cash Aston Villa's American chairman Randy Lerner has insisted he is at the club for the long haul and plans to continue making money available for signings. "The money I have spent on players at Aston Villa has come from my personal pocket, that is correct," said Lerner. "I have no intention, and no market set, for when I would stop spending." But Lerner, who took over in September, said he is "not sure I can answer what I plan to do with the club" but would not sell naming rights to Villa Park. "What about naming rights? Does that include an offer for one of the stands? Or does that mean Villa Park becoming the Dorito Bowl? For example, if Nike wanted the North Stand, is that naming rights?" added Lerner. Will I be around Aston Villa in 10 years time? I hope so, absolutely Randy Lerner "But we are not changing the name Villa Park - and we are also not opening a super casino. We are not in the casino business. In fact, I have never been inside a casino." Villa boss Martin O'Neill has signed the likes of Stilian Petrov, Ashley Young and John Carew since Lerner took over at the club. And in his first interview since taking control in August, Lerner said that although he expected more players to arrive at Villa he did not expect to play a high-profile public role. He added: "Will I be around Aston Villa in 10 years time? I hope so, absolutely. "But I don't belong in the media, owning a team is not a media platform." And Lerner explained why he had decided to become involved with the Premiership club. He said: "Why am I here? I had been interested in and eager to be involved with the Premier League over the last five years. "The basis for that interest is probably a combination of having some background in England, secondly, I am a very big fan of English football. "I thought it was the right time for me, in terms of where I am in my career. "A set of circumstances converged and it seemed to make sense. "It was available and I thought it was the right time. I wanted to do it and felt we had done our research, I felt I knew what I was getting myself into. "I don't have accommodation in the midlands yet, but I have looked at a few things. Take note Fat Man, your job is to organise the finances and business side of things: FOOTBALL CHAIRMANSHIP IS NOT A MEDIA PLATFORM FOR YOU.
brummie
We can't believe how lucky we are. So far, and it is early days, we appear to have bagged the absolute perfect owner. The man has just been magnificent.

Guest nufc_geordie
Agree. Villa seem to have the perfect Chairman, not wanting limelight, just wanting to organise behind the scenes and make money available when the manager wants it, allowing the manager control of the football side as it should be. In Carew, Young and Molney villa have made some very astute signings.
buzza
Freddy's quotes in the chronicle today: "The money I have spent on pies at Newcastle has come from my personal account replenished by NUFC finances, that is correct," said the crumb laden fat sheister."My relatives and some of the halls also use this arrangement aswell". "What about naming rights? We're just about to sign a deal with a local company in the retail food industry. The idea is to move to a new stadium with a revolutionary new design. What's that then? It's a consumable stadium that gets rebuilt/cooked every week, the fans eat their way out after the match. What happens on a midweek game with low attendences? Are you implying alterior motives! "But I don't belong in the media, I belong in a sty where I can wallow in my own shit." Sorry, bored!
madras
funny the way that everybody disbelieves shepherd yet takes as gospel what a complete stranger says.....what is lerner supposed to say "i think a chairman should have a high public profile,i'm gonna be in the papers everyday me like"...lets see if he practises what he preeches as words are cheep. Perhaps its a benefit of the doubt thing. Shepherd has proven himself to be full of shit, Lerner has not.
brummie
funny the way that everybody disbelieves shepherd yet takes as gospel what a complete stranger says.....what is lerner supposed to say "i think a chairman should have a high public profile,i'm gonna be in the papers everyday me like"...lets see if he practises what he preeches as words are cheep. He's been true to his word so far - he's so low profile as to be almost hermit like. He doesn't even like sitting in the directors chairs in the exec section of the ground. Sits there on the steps with his kids. FWIW, he's been exactly the same at the Cleveland Browns, too. And more than that, so far he has delivered on absolutely everything he has promised. You really can't argue with that. He just gets on with it in the background. He's just bagged us a 25m, 5yr kit deal with Nike, whereas Ellis had us playing in cheap Hummel rags. Ellis shut down work on the new training ground. Lerner has got work going again, improved the plans, and we're on the way to getting quite possibly the best training facilities in the country. He's sitting on a family trust worth 6bn dollars, put his hand in his pocket to finance transfers and said quite clearly that he hasn't set a limit on how much he'll spend. Best of all, he understands the game, and has stressed over and over that he understands what football means to people's lives, having lived in England for years. You won't find him calling Villa a "franchise". For a man who has been at the club for only 6 months, that's not bad. Compare this to Doug "I'm Mr Aston Villa, me" Ellis, who took absolutely every opportunity to hog the limelight, and failed to deliver. If that's what these so-called suspicious foreign owners are line, they'll do for me.
brummie
.. sorry, I forgot my point in the above post. 6 months ago we were as downhearted as you lot were, facing a lifetime of Ellis and no sign of improvement whilst other clubs overtook us. The situation we have now seemed a million miles away, and our situation was every bit as grim as yours is. You might find yourselves getting shot of FS sooner than you think, these things can just happen, and in your case probably will happen.

brummie
Going down the table not up though. There's not a villa fan around who doesn't think MON is the right man for the job. We also said at the start of the season that top half would be a good finish with the inherited DOL squad. He'll start building his own team in the summer. The important thing is he gets the backing and the environment from the chairman to do it in. He'd never have got that from Ellis.

Couldn't see O'Neill doing as well tbh.
brummie
So what makes O'Neill this great manager then? His record in the SPL? And Hughes has done well at Blackburn with a small budget. Couldn't see O'Neill doing as well tbh. This has been done to death here god knows how many times. But I will pick on the small budget thing - one of MON's achievements was to go to Scotland and overturn the best part of a decade of total Rangers dominance with a budget which was pathetic in comparison. He also got the same team of pretty average players to the UEFA cup final as well. Not to mention winning things with Leicester on a shoestring budget. This is the first time he's ever had real money to spend.
Guest geordieracer
your an absolute idiot if you don't think Martin O'Neill is a great manager he got wycombe from non league to a league club, wycombe would probably be completely unknown if it wasn't for him (won 2 fa trophys and nearly got in to division 1 if memory serves) norwich yeh short spell but still had a good record with them won more than drawn or lost. leicester got them promoted first season, then he was there for four more seasons, every season they finished in the top half and got into europe twice. He won the league cup twice and lost in the final once. thats like neil warnock turning sheff u into a regular european challenger ever yseason and winning 2 league cups inside the next four years then celtic nearly wins the uefa cup and wins loads of domestic honours why isn't he a great manager? shall we compare that to our glenn? got 2 clubs relegated
