Didn't we just have an England B last week?

Yep against Albania 3-1 win I think.

They also had one in the winter against Belarus where Green got injured and they scored while he was down.  Don't recall the score though.

Aye but it's not a proper team with set fixtures like it used to be

England B's recent fixtures

England B 3 - 1 Albania at Turf Moor, Burnley, May 25, 2007

England England B 1 - 2 Belarus at Madejski Stadium, Reading, Berkshire, May 25, 2006

England B 4 - 1 Russia B at Loftus Road, London, April 21, 1998

England B 1 - 2 Chile B at The Hawthorns, West Bromwich, February 10, 1998

If he thinks they are the best players available why shouldn't he play them?

Give some other proper under 21 players more chances, like what he has done with numerous substitutions?

Because they would have been 21at the start of the tournament  qualifiers, nothing wrong with it imo and we havent had a England B for years so they wouldnt be playing for England at all.

When did the qualifier start? Was Matt Derbyshire registered then as he only came up on form for Blackburn half a year ago, and subsequently called up.

We should have made people like Rooney & Lennon go to the tournament.

I actually did that in FM, Rooney gave an elbow to a player in the seconed match and got banned for the rest of the tournment

Won it quite easily though.

Im sure he is there to try and win games, the tournament. Not just to give some lads a chance. Whats wrong with giving some of the younger lads who arent ready for full international duty a chance anyway?

Why does the age matter? They're all young players that could play for England one day getting experience which is the whole point.

plus it would be stupid to break up the squad that started the tournament just because they turn 22.

I thought so at the time, but I didn't want to sound stupid...it was Routledge who created Taylor's goal on the left, not Young. 2 assists as a second half sub, always performed well at U21 level, and he could provide a wonderful supply line to Newcastle players for years to come...take him. Please?

Leroy Lita, James Vaughan

will be a midtable force in the Premiership

European Under-21 Championship - preview and latest betting

Alex Wolstenholme

"Like their senior counterparts England go into a major tournament fancied to do well and do at least have the form to back that up with an impressive win over Germany in the qualifying play-off and a 5-0 rout of Slovakia in Tuesday night's final warm-up"

England are one of eight countries taking part in this summer's European Under-21 Championships in Holland with new boss Stuart Pearce taking a side packed with Premiership players to the competition.

Group A: Belgium (latest bet365 odds: 25/1) - Outsiders for the competition along with Serbia and the Czech Republic and their preparation has been hampered by a number of injuries in the Belgian senior side that has seen a host of the U-21's called up for Euro 2008 qualifiers this week.

Tom De Sutter netted a hat-trick in ther final warm-up game against Luxembourg last Sunday while full-back Anthony Vanden Borre is joining Fiorentina from Anderlecht after the tournament.

Holland (latest bet365 odds: 6/1) - The hosts and holders after their 2006 triumph, inspired by Ajax's wanted man Klaas Jan Huntelaar. He can no longer play at Under-21 level but much is expcted of his club team-mate Ryan Babel, linked with Arsenal on a weekly basis by the newspapers and highly-regarded by national team boss Marco van Basten.

Newcastle United's highly-rated young goalkeeper Tim Krul is in the Holland squad.

Israel (latest bet365 odds: 7/1) - Having knocked France out in the qualifying play-offs, the odds reflect the fact that Israel are live outsiders for this tournament.

17-year-old striker Ben Sahar of Chelsea has already made his senior national team debut and is set to build on his burgeoning reputation at this tournament.

Portugal (latest bet365 odds: 4/1) - Strongly fancied to win the competition due to the presence in their squad of players such as new Manchester United signing Nani and Werder Bremen forward Hugo Almeida.

Jose Goncalves of Hearts, Manuel Fernandes, lately of Portsmouth and Everton and Ricardo Vaz Te of Bolton provide the other British interest.

Group B: Czech Republic (latest bet365 odds: 40/1) - The rank outsiders have named a mostly home-based squad and have a number of injury problems ahead of thier opening game against England.

Birmingham City fans will recognise skipper Martin Latka after his loan spell at St Andrew's last season.

England (latest bet365 odds: 5/2) - Like their senior counterparts England go into a major tournament fancied to do well and do at least have the form to back that up with an impressive win over Germany in the qualifying play-off and a 5-0 rout of Slovakia in Tuesday night's final warm-up.

Stuart Pearce will be determined to do well after the furore that surrounded his appointment while still Manchester City boss and he takes a squad to Holland that has had a fair amount of Premiership experience this season.

Italy (latest bet365 odds: 2/1) - The favourites showed their quality in the 3-3 draw with England that marked the re-opening of Wembley Stadium and have won five of the last eight tournaments.

Former Chelsea striker Pierluigi Casiraghi is in charge of a side that contains Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi, rising Juventus star Raffaele Palladino and fellow striker Giampaulo Pazzini, scorer of a hat-trick in that Wembley game.

Serbia (latest bet365 odds: 25/1) - Face the two competition favourites in their group but a number of the Serbia players are gaining good experience with the senior national team at present and could spring a surprise.

Star man is CSKA Moscow midfielder Milos Krasic, part of the Serbian squads at the last two tournaments in which they have finished as runners-up and semi-finalists respectively.

If you don't like Lita you still have Matt Derbishire, Theo Walcott and David Nugent.

Don't like Hoyte you still have Liam Rosenoir, Steven Taylor, Nedum Onuoha and Micah Richards.

You'd also have Gabby Agbonlahor if he'd kept his phone switched on.

Surely Nugent has to be in there! Who are the other centre-mids, btw? Don't know much about Noble.

Nugent is not as proven as Vaughan, Lita, Derbyshire, Walcott and Agbonlahor. Noble is a typical English central dynamic midfielder in the mould of Gerrard and Lampard (obviously not in the same class).

Only other U21 central midfielder of note is Tom Huddlestone. And maybe Michael Johnson of Manchester City?

Howd'you work that out? He's played a hell of a lot more first team games than any of that lot!

Except none of them were in the Premier League. He has a scoring record of 1 in (roughly) 3.5 in the lower leagues.

Agbonlahor has played almost every match this season having only made a few sub appearances prior to that. He has scored 10 goals in 40 games, despite being played out of position wide right for 4/5ths of the season, a scoring rate which is only slightly worse than Nugent's lower league rate.

For all we know, Nugent may turn out to be a modern day (yet less prolific) Guy Wittingham.
