USA Stadiums

I heard today on SSN that one of the stadiums in the NASL is called "Pizza Hut Park"

Anyone know if any of the other stadiums are named anything to crass

Yes - most of them do - they are named after large corporations with very dull names. The Galaxy play at "Home Depot Center" - Home Depot is a large DIY-type store.

As bad as commercialism is in the states, only professional "Soccer" allows the names of companies to appear on the front of the kits. Ruins them IMO. I would pay extra if I could buy a newcastle top without a corporate logo on the front.

On it's way to England as well? Emirates Stadium...

I wouldn't be surprised if it's standard in the EPL within the next 10-20 years.

Btw... Nashville Predators (NHL team) play in the Gaylord Entertainment Center...

It only effectively works when you open a new stadium. St James' Park, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge etc will always be known by those names even if the clubs do sell out to corporate sponsors.

Can see a lot of lower league English clubs who build 'flat pack' style grounds going this way, can't blame them mind..money talks

There would be no point in renaming SJP to anything else. Everyone would still just continue to use SJP and the sponsors know this. Only new ground like The Emirates have sponsors in the ground title. Grounds that are brand new have never been known as anything else will attract the sponsors, not us.

They recently changed that name to the Sommet Center for obvious reasons.

Virtually every major arena or stadium in America has corporate sponsorship.  It's just become part and parcel of the American sporting experience, along with luxury suites, corporate seating and higher ticket prices.  Although I suppose higher ticket prices are an epidemic throughout the world, really.

It's actually worse than it sounds, though - individual seating areas, stands, terraces, etc. are often corporately sponsored within the arena or ground as well.  The lure of tens and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars has been hard to resist for most teams, regardless of the sport.

The unfortunate thing is that most of the corporately-sponsored grounds for football in the USA are quite nice.  20-30 thousand seats, proper stands, good atmosphere.  Much better than the giant American football stadiums that had been used in the past.  Shame about the names.

One of the biggest issues is the difficulty in getting public funding for stadium construction.  Most cities mandate that any use of taxpayer dollars for a private venture of that size has to be a approved by a a public or local congressional vote.  For the last decade the trend is that these votes are rejected, or funding is severely limited.  So the ownership groups pay the full amount themselves, and the lure of a big check from a naming rights sponsor upfront is a very tempting way to get a quick chunk of your investment back immediately.

That's soon going to change. From what I've heard, the NHL and NBA are soon going to let sponsors on their jerseys. The MLS already have changed over. Toronto and Los Angeles have sponsors. I believe there are others as well, but I can't remember.

I know that with Toronto FC, you can buy kits with the sponsor (BMO) or without. But the sponsored kits are by far more popular, even though they're CAN$40 more expensive. The fans want the same kit that the players wear.

Where did you hear that?  I can't see the more historic teams like the Lakers, Celtics (NBA) or The Blackhawks, Bruins (NHL) giving up their logos to have a sponsor name on the shirt....

I had originally heard it on CBC radio in Canada in relation to NHL jerseys getting sponsors, and they mentioned that NBA were up for it too. There's an article here where an owner talks about the prospect:
