Carroll is even more worthy of blame because he knew very well what the board were like and what they were capable with regards to ripping the team apart. Shearer's legacy will be romanticised in the aftermath of Carroll leaving. But the comparison doesn't completely stick. Newcastle were one of the best teams in the country, favourites to finish in the top 2.
