Absolutely worth of a thread. Little early, but doesn't really matter. If a NUFC football match isn't worthy of a thread - with possible debut run outs (casual kickabout or not), I don't know what is!

Fair enough - but, my two cents on that: http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufcforum/index.php/topic,72878.msg3063292.html#msg3063292

What I meant was, why limit our progress based on their action/inaction - why not just fulfil as much of our potential as we can? Even if that means activity more aligned with those teams in 6th and above? So long as we're not spending more than we have, having ambition greater than Fulham and Villa is a definite positive. There's no reason to stop at "well we've added to our squad more than Fulham" if there's capacity to challenge Liverpool etc on an ambition level at least (if not in reality ).

Cheap(ish), know what you get, committed, doesn't cause trouble, does a reasonable job as a back-up striker/against Sunderland?

I can't see why the money brought in from the Carroll sale can't be used to bring this 'aim' forward a year. Where's that quote from, Dave? I think the age of building a team/squad and gradually progressing towards Europe is over, personally. There are so many clubs with supreme spending power that unless unless you can spike up the table with a group of players within a season (or two, if you're very lucky) - your best players will get sniped off your books by the pull of silly wages and European football. Wouldn't be surprised if Spurs, for example, slumped back down to midtable before long having failed to capitalise on their impressive ascent up the table by securing a successive season in the CL. If my theory holds true (and I'm sure many of you disagree that it does!) then I think we're really missing a trick to build quickly and with quality around our promising spine. I think they're (probably) safe this summer, but Colo, Tiote and Ben Arfa next summer will I'm sure be the subject of jealous glances from sides with the resources to prise them from us.

Speaking of French diving, I hope our new recruits aren't too prone to diving - hate seeing NUFC players diving What, even when Jonas dives? It's hilarious, looks like he's been hoisted up by his puppet master in the skies. Jonas will go to ground, no question, but rarely when there's no contact or excessive pressure - and rarely with any embarrassing histrionics or superfluous rolling. Was more thinking of Duff *shudder*
