Newcastle v Notts Forest - 19:45 Monday 29/03/10 Pre-match thread.
TRon replied to The Prophet's topic in Football
Deep down they must realise that a small club that wins a trophy is still a small club, wheras a big club that can pull in 40,000 in the Championship is what it's all about. -
Not sure how you can assume that; Lets give Hughton some credit and say that in the last window he stretched the finances to fill a number of holes in the squad. What's to say that if we had £15m and all we needed was a striker, Hughton would not go for a £15million pound striker? /or not, just seems a bit rough to make claims on Hughtons transfer philosophy after effectively one (pretty effective) window. I think you misundertand, i'm not being critical of Hughton. I don't think Hughton will be a big spender, nor do i want him to go down that route (unless a top player comes available). IMO Hughton will bide his time and wait until later in the window before securing bigger targets. If we had 15m i highly doubt Hughton would spend it on three players. You are entitled to disagree. It'll be interesting to see what sort of players Hughton goes for if he's given any sort of decent funds. For all he's done well this season no one has any real idea how successful he'll be in chasing bigger players.

No. In no way was he party to that article. How was Louise Taylor able to tell us about Taylor's disappointment with the lack of support from the club then? maybe, just maybe he conveyed his feelings to someone else who told loopy lou. His Da? or someone else........ does it really matter. it's just adding to the hatchet job being done on him to protect a player in form. this time last year carroll would probably have been listed. quite disgusting really the way people have certain views about life in general but are prepared to ditch them for football. You are assuming everyone knows what went on or what happened. You might be of the opinion that nothing condones a violent response and you would probably be right but without more details I wouldn't cast aspersions on how the club are dealing with it. Hang on on sec, you have made it quite clear your against Taylor with out the full facts...no I cant be arsed to go back through your posts either & highlight them to you but that is how you have came across to me in this thread. Also what more details do you need as I thought L.Taylors article was really S.Taylors article I.E how one of the combatants sees it. I am sceptical about Taylor, I wouldn't say I'm against him. I still remember the way he carried on in his contract wrangle with the club but that doesn't mean I'm against him in everything he does. I do put the football first though and if the club hierarchy haven't come down hard on Carroll (yet) then I would trust that it's in hand and being dealt with.

I still don't think he's that good, I reckon his limitations will be more exposed in the premier. However if he genuinely wants to stay on a realistic wage I'd be happy to keep him. Otherwise £8m would do nicely. that goes for the whole squad. Well the same applies if anyone asks the same question about anyone else in the squad.

Ok, but how you can find something disgusting without knowing IF there's been a hatchet job on Taylor I find a bit odd.

No. In no way was he party to that article. How was Louise Taylor able to tell us about Taylor's disappointment with the lack of support from the club then? Perhaps she's speculating, based purely on the fact that they picked Carroll at Doncaster? If I was Steve Taylor I'd be mighty pissed off if a journalist tried to tell the world I was disappointed at the club hierarchy.
-
That would be acceptable progress in all honesty. It would be nice to buy players for Europe but for that we'd need half a team and £50million.

To run the club as it should be £15-20million sounds about right. Anything less and Ashley would be giving his critics another round of ammunition. While I appreciate there is a limit to spending these days, a club like Newcastle should be greeting a return to the premier with some real intent.

Anyone who thinks Taylor's sympathy article in the Guardian was done without his knowledge is deluded tbh.

Maybe a better comparison in their case would be Adebayor headbutting Bentnar on the pitch. Again the standard reaction is silence and denial when required. This business is about winning games and people like Wenger and Hughton are paid to make sure they do. Hughton's not going to take Carroll out of the side and effectively bend over and invite Forest to shag us. He will rightly send out Carroll to smack the living daylights out of them and send them packing.
-
I am quite happy about the strict policy of not signing players over a certain age. Not that I don't rate Bullard but teams that sign too many players of this type always start to slide down the table before too long. I think we need to look at a powerful midfielder with a good engine rather than a Bullard. Someone in the Tim Cahill mould would be perfect.

How could Hughton have stopped this? Not really about stopping the fight but a sever reprimand would have been the solution. In what form? Fine Carroll 2 weeks wages and drop him to the reserves for a month. You've got Ameobi, Ranger and Lovenkrands and we're 12 points away from being promoted IF Forest win all of their games. 9 points if we beat Forest tonight. You do that it shows Carroll what he did was wrong and that he's not a shoe-in for the first team no matter what his actions are. By playing him it doesn't reprimand his actions one bit and it wont defer him from doing it in future. Hitting him in the pocket wont hurt him hugely, but if you drop him and others succeed whilst he's not in the side (which they would) then it hurts his ego, which is what he needs. Deny ourselves the striker that's scored 10 goals in 11 games to put us in the position you describe when no complaint has been lodged and no charges made? Do that to a 21 year old kid in the best form of his life, when he's improving and gaining confidence at a greater rate than he has or will at any time in his career. Even though we refused to do it to Barton either before or after he was jailed. An older, supposedly wiser, more senior squad member with more previous. After nowt happened to Dyer or Bowyer or Shearer? When Liverpool did nothing of the sort to Steven gerrard who had been charged. Man City have done nowt to Michael Johnson. Birmingham did nowt like that to Pennant. Arsenal did nowt like that to Adams. In a corrupt world I respect your moral stance, but with a precedent set over and over again in the past I cannot see why we should start trying to turn the tide. All i care about is winning tonight so I'll welcome Carroll onto the pitch. I hope Carroll destroys Forest tonight. If he gives their centre back a good battering all the better.

to be fair they could see it as sweeping s*** under the carpet. in any other business/industry we'd say it stinks. I don't know many industries or businesses that will shoot themselves in the foot to please a few headline writers. no. i mean the journalist would see nufc keeping it in house as sweeping it under the carpet, like catholic churchmen molesting kids or chemical spills. if we keep quiet it may just be forgotten about. The same journalists will be tearing us to shreds if we don't get promotion. win win for the journo They do their jobs, the club have to do theirs.

I thought that you were bored with the thread. No that was Dave who I quoted.

They are safe. Like last season they've done just enough just in time to avoid any real pressure. I don't think they have built a squad who give a shit about Sunderland so I can't see them going anywhere from this point onwards though. They are spending shitloads just to survive basically.

Couldn't agree more.

To be fair, it hasn't looked too bad until this lot kicked off. it's because they are winning and doing well for crying out loud, not because there is gernuine comradery between the players. I am pretty sure that even the likes of Enrique and Jonas have been saying how the players all go out together far more than previously and players like Harewood and Simpson have remarked on the great spirit among the players. I think there's probably something more to it than just winning, although that obviously is a big factor.
-
It's not just this, Barton was supposed to have been at his worst again. It looks like you're OK as long as you're in the click. What clique? Obviously not everyone is going to get on in a squad the size of Newcastle's but if there are people who don't want to be part of the family they will probably leave. That will be the case whether it's Barton, Taylor or Carroll, and IMO they are welcome to fuck off at the earliest opportunity.
-
Taylor doesn't have to leave, if he does it will be totally down to him. The Guardian article mentions that Nolan is part of a powerful dressing room clique, but while I'd be the last one to defend Nolan, it seems to me the spirit throughout the squad is as good as it's been for a long time. If Nolan has been instrumental in that he deserves praise, not underhand insinuations which this bint is indulging in. Steve Taylor is doing himself no favours if she's acting as his mouth piece. depends on the way the incident came about. I'm assuming that Taylor must have provoked it to some extent otherwise I don't think the majority of the squad would have sided with Carroll. It does seem as though Taylor is the fly in the ointment just going off what we know...which admittedly isn't a lot. it's funny how we aren't allowed to say it was carrolls fault as we werent there and its press speculation but its exactly the same press saying the majority of the squad are backing him. most of whom just probably want an in form player in the team and dont want to cause any further problems......lets face it, footballers often tend to be a pretty gutless bunch when it comes to standing up for something beyond their pay. I don't know whose fault it was, but if the club as a whole are backing Carroll then i don't have a problem with supporting that decision. Like I said, squad unity and team spirit hasn't been this good in a long time and I would think those at the club will have a pretty good handle on what is best for Newcastle United.
