Up until the last set of accounts we'd received nothing from Sports Direct so they are not a sponsor, or at least haven't been. The sign can't be taken in isolation, it's all over the ground.

What Barton says about the 4 players is probably true, people should be more concerned about that than who is saying it.

I doubt very much that it's been done to clean the letters and I find it hard to believe that it's been done for safety reasons. The ground will have been checked before the season started and anything dangerous would have been sorted before a ball was kicked.

I bet the club has paid for it if it turns out to be a Sports Direct advert.

I don't know that he would have been as good, but he was good and that's what we have had to replace to stand still or go forwards with our strikers. I haven't had a go at Ba because I don't think he's had a chance yet but he'll have to go a long way to replace what we've lost.

I would have thought that if Ba is our Carroll replacement then all that matters is how he plays for us compared to how Carroll played for us. The same goes for the others that you have mentioned.

The three teams that we have played have not won a game between them, they've drawn 4 and lost 5. They haven't just played Newcastle, 2 thirds of the games they've played haven't been against us.

I would agree with your estimate from Ba, Best and Cabaye. We'll probably get around 6 from defence and I doubt we'll get that from both wingers and Tiote combined. As for not letting in many, so far we've played 3 teams who are playing shit and have amassed 4 points between them and scored the same number of goals, I think people are getting carried away with our results so far.

You said "That core would have us in around that top 8 this season," I would have thought that goals might be needed if we're to reach that position. Where do you think the goals are going to come from? Fair enough if you think we'll get 38 goals between Best and Ba.
