So much for him joining on monday.
-
I'm not disputing both are good players just illustrating what happened in th luque case.
-
Why... cos he's Spanish? Big money signing on big wages. Everyone raving about how good he is and how they've seen this goal and that goal on youtube. Doesn't immediately set the world alight and struggles to come to terms with the physical nature of the premiership and/or picks up nasty injury. Fans start getting on players back at what is actual and/or percieved lack of commitment when player does play. Viscious cycle is started and player eventually leaves for fraction of their original cost.
-
You could see him turning out just like Luque if we were to sign him.
-
Big Sam today in the interview after the signing of viduka says he wants 2 players for every position. Now even if you include Ramage as one of our centre backs that still leaves another 2 to sign.
-
It was. It says so in the article too. "The video comes almost a year after a clip of the Toon star singing along to rock music in his car appeared on the internet. Thousands of Toon fans logged on to see Shearer belting out U2's Elevation, which was coming out of his stereo as he appeared to be driving around Ponteland in Northumberland, near his Darras Hall home. On fans' website newcastle-online.com, one admirer posted: "What a great guy. He's my favourite player of all time and now my favourite singer." Another wrote: "When someone as class as Alan Shearer can be that desperately uncool as a dad, the rest of us are given hope." Shearer's agents refused to comment on the video today."

Joey Barton completes move for £5.8m - Man City

Everyone seems quite pleased now. In fact this seems like pretty much the response to any signing in our current state (except for Sib). How many games before people saying hes shit/finished/here for the money/etc? -
MAYBE?!

Scott Parker signs for West Ham - £6.5m (+£500k) fee confirmed

Brilliant contribution. Better than this: "Jenas, Ramage and Boumsong are all good players!" Jenas has gone on to do pretty well at Spurs as I've outline in the post but don't let facts get in the way of it. Thats not really what I said about Boumsong and Ramage. Boumsong must have something about him considering be was in the french squad before he came here anyway. Do you not agree that Boumsong had a pretty decent 1st half of the season with us. I remember the man u game at the start of his 1st full season with us and everyone was quite suprised by his 2 errors that led to the goals. After that there was no coming back. Similar with Ramage, I think he filled in quite well for Carr initially, especially considering he was playing out of position. It seems like you're one of those that once your mind is made up on a player thats it. What would you say about Butt, I'm pretty sure you would have been one of those saying we should pay someone to take him off our hands, not had a bad season has he. -

WHAT?! From what I remember from this board most thought he was past it and that viana should have had his place by now. Most on this board were happy to see him leave. -

Another one hounded out by the fans. I posted this in the 'Is the anyone goog enough for Newcastle United?' thread. How many times are we gonna just write off players? Everyone signing for the toon in the last 5 years or so ultimately gets hounded out by the fans. Player arrives, does pretty well. Most fans think he's a good signing. Theres talk he should be in his respective international squad. This point is highlighted by the following players: Jenas - When Bobby bought the lad, we all thought he had unearthed a gem. A promising teenager who made his first appearance in the 1-0 win over the mackems. Had a very good 1st full season for us and was named PFA young player of the year. In his second full season, as happens with most young players his form dips and people start getting on his back. Slowly peoples opinions change and they start saying 'I always thought he was shit'. Leaves for Spurs, lets face it has done pretty well and although peoples initial assessment of him being a potential world star was a little over the top, he is still a very decent player. Last season he scored a respectable 8 league goals (that would make him our 2nd highest goalscorer behind Martins, who got 11). Our main central midfielders (Butt, Emre, Parker) between them got 6 league goals betwen them. In his first season with Spurs he also got a respectable 8 league goals. Parker - Again first season, everyone was delighted with him. When he wasn't getting picked for England we all thought it was ridiculous and that he should be in the squad. A dip in form in his second season and all of a sudden he is absolute dog-shit and everyones delighted we're getting rid of him. Martins - It seems to be happening again. After a poor start he has plugged away in a new country, new league, playing as the only out and out striker in most of our games. People thought he was brilliant a potential world star. After a poor end of the campaign and its swinging round again. If he's here next season and it starts poorly.... Speed - In his final season for us the general opinion was that he was rubbish and most when he was sold for peanuts to Bolton. Probably been one of boltons top performers since he has been there. Boumsong - When 1st arrived we thought we'd paid over the odds but had got a decent enough defender. Second season was a disaster. Had personal problems which probably contributed. Don't know how he has played for Juve this year but his true form was certainly not that we had seen in his second season. Ramage - When he initially filled in for Carr, people were quite impressed and most thought he did a very good job playing out of position. A couple of bad mistakes gifting goals to Rooney and he has never recovered and we've all written him off. Butt - This ones pretty much gone the other way. After a decent start it all went tits up and we would have happily given him away. Couldn't find him a club so he has applied himself in the right was however and probably our player of the season. Had we stuck with a few other players would the same happened. Theres others such as Viana, Emre, Shola etc. Basically we can't afford to keep writing off players as soon as they go through one bad patch or getting on their back because they don't meet our unrealistic expectation. We as fans have been guilty of this too often. -
I'm sure part of the reason why Parker and Jenas wanted to leave was their relationship with the fans though. The others you mention have had poor performances that can't be argued against. Shola was a big player for us though before his hip started playing up and I think his record under Roeder was something like a goal every 2 games, very acceptable for a squad player. Despite this most would sooner see him given away. What I think I was trying to highlight is that for us once a player goes into a bad run of form, thats him finished. Although the coaches/manager have to take some of the blame, we the fans are almost just as responsible at times with our knee-jerk reactions. Do you not agree that Boumsong had a pretty decent 1st half of the season with us. I remember the man u game at the start of his 1st full season with us and everyone was quite suprised by his 2 errors that led to the goals. After that there was no coming back. As much as people wont want to believe it I reckon Moore (free transfer) and Bramble (been here for years) will have been on a fair whack! Moore was on £10k pw, not sure what Bramble was on but he came from the Championship and never signed a contract extension in his time here. Where did you hear that? I remember rumours of Moore being on £40k a week and I am sure Bramble has signed at least one improved contract since he joined. Even so the players we've got rid of except Parker are probably not amongst the highest earners - owen, dyer, luque, emre etc Looking at the premiership clubs wages, the top 5 are as follows: - PREMIER LEAGUE'S TOP WAGE BILLS 2005/06 Chelsea - £114m Manchester Utd - £85m Arsenal - £83m Liverpool - £69m Newcastle Utd - £52m Source: Deloitte Now the wages may have been helped a bit by those released, but it doesn't get away from the fact we've got a situation where we have a tiny squad but a massive wage bill. -

Fair point, but with him gone we only have one recognised left back who picks and chooses his games as he fancies. -

So gone are: Pav Bramble Moore Gooch Bernard Following soon: Parker Sib (unless he agrees to stay for 1 year instead of the 2 he is seeking) So thats 7 players gone and thats probably not even the end of players yet to leave and bringing in a total of just 7m. Also only one of these players likely to be on big wages is Parker so not saving too much on the wage bill. We knew before getting rid of any players we desperately needed to boost the squad numbers, now with 7 gone and counting how many players do you think Sam needs to bring in? PS I would have made a new thread but being one of those unfairly penalised for not having been a too frequent poster I couldn't. Perhaps if I had started pointless threads and made pointless replies I would have reached the 100 posts or so required to start threads. -
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,2483_2137655,00.html Whos side are you on? For me,its obvious that Freddy have done the right thing in sacking Bond and appointing Sam although both of them have a similar issue. How can you say he was morally right to sack Bond but it was ok for him to employ Sam? Personally I think Bond's got a strong case, as Sam was probably implicated more by the programme yet we feel its ok to employ him but yet sack someone who was implicated less.

Bridge? What makes you 2 think he'll be one of our signings. Can't see Chelsea selling and he signed a new contract in Jan so its not like he's gonna be asking for a move.

Mark Viduka signs for Newcastle - 2 years + 1 more optional
LateRegistration replied to a topic in Football
Ben-Haim and Viduka make perfect sense from a purely football and business perspective. We don't have a lot of money and have just lost an entire back five for nowt so any defenders are a bonus, to get one of the best last season for clubs outside the top 4 for nothing would be quite a coup. Viduka will offer a different option up front to Martins and Owen. He probably had one of the best goals to games ratios in the league last season and didn't miss too many games. Again for free we can't afford to not consider him. -
People are giving him credit for the timing of the sacking of Roeder and the subsequent appointment of Sam, purely because of the extra time it will give the manager with regards to assessing and preparing the squad for the new season. I think Freddy's been a little more cunning than this. I can't help but think the timing was more to do with the season ticket renewals, I mean with the above he has basically guaranteed sell out of season tickets next year. I think with the appointment of Sam he has also deflected attention from the Owen situation. A damaging situation where by a player leaves for almost half the price we paid for him having only been fit for a dozen or so games. Even if Owen leaves now most the focus is on Sam. Add in the fact we are obviously struggling for funds, Freddy must be glad that most fans seem to have bought the notion put across by Sam that he will not be looking for big names rather less well known/aging players whom he is so good at spotting and maximising their potential.
-
Their view on big Sam is interesting because for once their view doesn't seem to be shared by the majority of fans. Usually they write exactly what most fans are thinking and their match reports are normally spot on. Their ability to influence public opinion mustn't be underestimated and one hopes their current piece on Bramble being released isn't a sign of things to come where they find any opportunity to have a pop. There have been several times in the past where they have critised and mocked Bramble, now all of a sudden they're saying he's a potential England international who simply had problems concentrating. The fact is Bramble's had several opportunities and there have been times when he has been superb and we've thought 'maybe he can keep this up?' He hasn't and we must move on instead of finding some remedy for his inability to concentrate for 90 minutes.

The right man is now available Freddy, what do you do?
LateRegistration replied to a topic in Football
Don't think anyone's mentioned this yet but the fact that Shepherd sacked Kevin Bond for his alledged involvement in taking bungs along with Harry Redknapp, whilst at Portmouth would make Shepherd look pretty foolish for then employing a man whose name was much more heavily linked in accepting bungs. Coupled with the facts that we've approached Allardyce in the past and been turned down and sacking Roeder after Shepherd went through all that trouble with the LMA to get him employed in the 1st place including the following quote by Barnwell: "And as for keeping men out of work, I find it fairly ironic that you and Newcastle of all people are taking the moral high-ground of compassion and job security. Your past record for dismissals and termination of managers' contracts speaks for itself", suggests to me it isn't gonna happen. As far as i'm concerned i'd love for Allardyce to be given the job but all in all it seems like a lose-lose situation for Freddy. -
