    Has Viduka

One of the worst signings ever. Allardyce is tragic. I held my tongue when he signed this fat waster, and tried to convince myself that maybe Sam's fitness expertise would benefit him. Utter bollox. Imagine if we had taken a punt on Santa Cruz instead ... makes me sick.
  3. It's very likely he gives them away to people for free though.

    Has Owen?

At the end of the day, no matter how bad a team is our strikers really ought to still be able to fashion some goals out of open play having played so many games. Martins was managing this despite how crap people feel he is. Why can't the much better Owen do it then? The guy can't even shoot the ball!!! He never shoots during matches?! I mean he knows the team sucks and he isn'tt likely to get enough quality chances, at least have the odd random pop from distance for goodness sake! No one will hold it against you. The guy is one of themost limited strikers in the premiership right now.
  5. When Martins came on yesterday, I knew for a fact he would force a defender to make a mistake and I knew for a fact he would have a decent strike or two at goal from distance. He did both on more than one occasion and caused genuine panic in the Liverpool defence. Despite not having the ideal partner for him in our team right now he simply needs to be out there. He has to be the very first name on our team sheet. That is the honest truth.

    Has Owen?

Owen scoring in crucial matches is a myth. In international tournaments his record is shambolic How is it a myth? off the top of my head... vs Argentina 98 (goal + pen) vs Brazil 02 vs Arsenal FA Cup Final (2 goals) vs Man Utd Charity Shield vs Portgual 04 (goal + pen) Charity Shield? Owen's problem isn't that he doesn't score in crucial games, it's that he's finished. Simple as that, it really is. People just refuse to accept it. Why I will never know.
  7. His best games were almost always alongside Sibierski. Some of their link up play was excellent at times and Sibierski is pretty limited to say the least, despite being an infinitely better player than Smith. That is why I mentioned Berbatov, as the type of player I felt would form a good partnership with Martins. I don't think a standard brutish target man like Heskey would necessarily work too great either. Martins needs someone who drops a little deeper and gets involved with the midfield play and looks to thread things through for him.
  8. This is what makes our whole situation all the more frustrating. We've continuously watched the same people fail us all season, but there isn't even the slightest evidence of any changes being made. Butt, Smith, Duff and Owen are apparently untouchable, having not achieved much of anything this season. Our top goalscorer, despite being away for over a month, however, cannot find a place in the team. Simply infuriating.
  9. If this was indeed Keegan's thinking then I could somewhat understand, although it would still irritate me immensely. However, Keegan chose to play both Owen and Duff as strikers and left Martins out over the weekend. I was extremely dissapointed by this. I doubt you could find two smaller, weaker specimens of men never mind footballers.

    Has Owen?

Someone I was having a chat with mentioned how our struggles this season coincided with Owen's return to fitness and the inability to integrate him into the team. Do people agree with this? I wonder if we would have been better off this season if he had maintained his struggles with his fitness. How many games have we won where he has started as opposed to those games he hasn't started?
  11. In exactly the same way that Adebayor would look so much worse playing for us instead of Arsenal. He definitely wouldn't be the same player he is right now if he were in our team. It troubles me that people can't see this. Instead they will tell you that Adebayor is a class player and has always been much better than Martins, when his early time at Arsenal proves otherwise. I'll tell you Martins will never be as good as Adebayor. Feel free to bump this when he proves me wrong. Fair enough if that is your opinion, but you cannot really say this with any real certainty. If Martins ends up leaving us I really would love to see him go to a decent premiership outfit, just to see what becomes of him in a better footballing environment than we have been able to provide for him since he has joined us. Well I was obviously offering my opinion. I say it with a fair degree of certainty all the same. Why the f*** would you love to see him go to a rival if you rate him though? I think some people are more arsed about being right on here than they are about the good of the club. Didn't mean it like that at all. I was just saying that it would be interesting to see how he might do in the premiership with better players around him, should we decide to move him on. I would hope that we wouldn't move him on, and if we do so I would hope that we got players of a high calibre in anyway, so that we are a better team and we don't suffer for it. I just would like to see him succeed in the premiership as I believe he can do it. If it is with us then all the better. I remember intensely disliking Dyer for a long time before he left, but couldn't bear the thought of selling him to another English club cos it was plain to see he had the potential to come back and haunt us. Same applies to Martins, but that doesn't mean he should our main striker over the next few seasons. I reckon most people, while rueing what mmight have been, were probably pleased enough to see John Dahl Tomasson making a success of himself at PSV then Milan - he seemed like a decent lad and it just didn't work for him here. If he had gone to Man U and had that success though.... I don't know how you were meant to interpret it. I like martins and want to be able to see him do well in the premiership and watch him every week. This doesn't mean we as a team will be crap with no good players does it?! Couldn't we still have an excellent team better than the one Martins is in? Couldn't our players whoever we choose to bring in still be excellent players too?! I would just hate to see Martins end up on a poor team similar to the one we currently have and hear people continue to claim he is rubbish. If he went somewhere like Man City, Villa or Everton I have no doubt he would be a better player than he has had a chance to show so far. I would hope we would be able to build a better team so that we wouldn't miss him though, and we could still enjoy our club's success. Hope that is a bit clearer.

I'll tell you Martins will never be as good as Adebayor. Feel free to bump this when he proves me wrong. That's not what he's getting at. Both have good attributes but both are pretty s**** at the basics, what Arsenal have done well is they've disguised Adebayor's shortcomings rather than trying to improve on them, his first touch is still awful and his decision making is still poor too but they've gone out of their way to play to his strengths, he's good in the air and strong on the ball so they play to those strengths, the biggest advantage he has is having a team full of technically gifted players that pass and move a ball well and create space for him, something we could only dream about but should aim for. Exactly. You did a much better job of explaining that than I have managed to so far. What you have said is basically what I was getting at when I said that it annoys me that people admit that Owen is better with a strong target man type beside him, but won't acknowledge that Martins would also be better with a more technical creative type beside him, someone like Berbatov for example. It's about recognising each individual's strengths and surrounding them with the players to get the most out of them.

  16. He only missed 6 games last year....and only managed 11 goals in the 32 he played. In his first season in the premiership and without having a pre-season with us, after having joined us so late in the window.
  17. Coach did you not say this yourself? Adebayor is the same age as Martins is he not? So if you felt he went from not being able to do anything to becoming a promising player and furthermore a goal getter which you didn't feel he could ever become, then why do you feel Martins will not progress any further?
  18. I'm just trying to show that there is a balance to this whole thing. Athletic ability and footballing intelligence are both important. I think a player who has top class athleticism and maybe not as much footballing intelligence is still as valuable as one who has a top class footballing brain but lacks athleticism. At the end of the day it's not as if Martins has zero intelligence or he wouldn't even be able to get into some of the areas he does to score. Equally it's not as though Owen has zero athleticism either, or he wouldn't score some of those leaping headers which he does. It's all about what you surround different types of players with and what else you do to get the most out of them. The idea that Martins will never be good enough because he is so unintelligent really irks me.
  19. You've completely missed the point, as tends to be your way. The people debating the intelligence bit seem to be in complete agreement that Martins should be playing, possibly even as the first striker on the teamsheet. Nobody is currently using it as an argument of picking Owen over Martins, unless I've missed something? So what exactly are you going on about? The issue that myself and others have taken issue with is the fact that some people are claiming that Martins, while being the African Superman in his spare time, is an "intelligent" footballer. Which I assume to mean that he's got good decision making, good positioning, makes good runs off the ball and generally works in the interests of the team. I perceive the truth as being the same as what you've just posted, for the most part, about him being someone who will be frustrating, but who could still be more valuable to the side than anyone else. Read the posts before going off on one, man. Very irritating attitude some people have towards the guy. People will say Owen needs a partner with more strength and pace beside him because he is so pathetic in these areas, but won't say Martins needs a partner with more awareness and creativity to help get the most out of him. that last part is a very, very good point... You see despite Martins limitations in making the perfect runs, I would still argue that there are players who you could play beside him who would still recognize how to get him the ball and would actually communicate with him on the pitch during the game to give him a better idea of what spaces he needs to get into while they are both out there playing together. Do any of you think he has ever played with anyone who even comes remotely close to doing this? Dyer was the closest and that is when Martins looked at his best for us. Also I have to say, although I agree with the idea that some aspects of football intelligence just cannot be taught, i still believe some aspects can be improved. Simply improving Martins runs into space is one thing that can certainly be improved despite how much some believe he lacks intelligence. Have him out on the training pitch working with a consistent strike partner and have them simulate different match situations and the types of movements they both should be making. Oh wait ... he has never had a consistent partner has he! Also, I doubt we have ever done anything like the above with him outside of the actual team training sessions.
  20. You've completely missed the point, as tends to be your way. I perceive the truth as being the same as what you've just posted, for the most part, about him being someone who will be frustrating, but who could still be more valuable to the side than anyone else. Read the posts before going off on one, man. I guess I had more of an issue with the person who said, he is unintelligent and is therefore no the long term answer. What the hell does that mean? Some players are brilliant and effective because their footballing intelligence is better than others even though their athleticism might be inferior. Some players are brilliant and effective due to their outstanding athletic abilities even though their footballing intelligence mightnot be as good. Why is one of these supposedly better than the other? In martins we have someone who can score goals in an astonishing variety of ways, yet because he is ot 'intelligent' enough he isn't good enough for us. Why not appreciate his undeniable abilities and surround him with more 'intelligent' players and take advantage of the player he is. Very irritating attitude some people have towards the guy. People will say Owen needs a partner with more strength and pace beside him because he is so pathetic in these areas, but won't say Martins needs a partner with more awareness and creativity to help get the most out of him.
  21. How stupid is this argument? Let me simplify things. Would I rather have this 'unintelligent' player who will score 20 goals for my team, from headers, volleys, shots from outside and inside the box, right foot, left foot etc. or the intelligent player who does fook all unless he is 6 yards out and it is laid on a plate for him. Martins is still raw and is not always pleasing on the eye, and will not always make the correct decisions, but he is a goalscorer, he scores goals. It's really that simple surely? Especially considering how poor we are in this department. Give me the unintelligent goalscorer anyday thanks. You lot can keep watching Owens intelligent uneffectiveness all you want. Ridiculous comments.
  22. Our only hope. He'll at least keep every game interesting that's for sure.
  23. I found it funny how so many of our random long punts upfield actually started looking half decent because Martins actually had the pace to chase them down and pressure the defender tracking back. For this reason alone he has to be on the pitch, considering how many times we punt the ball upfield aimlessly. Owen just doesn't have the pace to make anything out of these situations. I really can't believe anyone could ever justify not having Martins out on the pitch. It makes me sick. I couldn't believe Keegan had the nerve to play Duff as a second striker today, while Martins sat on the bench! Are you freakin kidding me? Is he crazy? He is definitely looking at names and past reputations right now, and that is quite unfortunate. Two from Duff, Smith and Butt, should be on the bench for Martins and Geremi. No doubt about it.
  24. Apart from Viduka against Boro, it took until October for us to score a goal that didn't involve either Charlie or Martins. That's with Charlie playing at LB for the majority of the season, before and after and Oba being f***** about in midfield by Allardyce since. The pair of them are quality and need to play. Anyone who doesn't see this is just deceiving themselves. You only have to look back at the types of goals these guys score. They have the ability to do things no one else in our team can. Look at Martins goal against Bolton or even the one against Man City for goodness sake! Zoggy's against Boro?! We are so predictable right now and we have no scoring ability in the team. Say what you want about Martins and Zoggy but at the end of the day they aren't afraid to shoot!!! Duff the dilly dally man will never shoot on time and Owen will only shoot from two yards out. God have mercy! How anyone can argue against Martins and Zoggy in the team is beyond me. Martins proving why he should be in the team for every single minute of football remaining for our team this season. Say whatever crap you want about him, but he is a dangerous weapon to have on the pitch for our team. Look at how his pace and agression forced both Riise and Skrtel into errors and directly led to goalscoring opportunities. I won't even mention the unbelievable 40 yard strike as I couldn't even begin to do it any justice. These things not only lead to goals but they lift the team. This is who he is. Owen on the other hand? He was waiting around for a perfect chance in the 6 yard box, so he could miss it again. It's a bloody joke it really is. I'll let Keegan off for today's game, but I swear if he doesn't get it through his thick skull that Martins is our greatest goal scoring threat then I pity him.
