Entering final year of his contract

Someone I suggested in the Summer Transfer thread

Lyon have been shutting down all interest as they want to keep him and he wants to stay as it is his hometown club.

They've all but agreed on an extension but just agreeing on the parameters as he has had injury problems.

He coped pretty well with the 2 best PL teams a few months ago

Yes, but he had a much better team of players around him too.

Him going into the Liverpool or Man City side would be great, but man ... that Man United team looks like it has so many holes in it defensively, it's going to be a heck of a task.

If he comes in and shores things up for them, then we really would have to give him the best DM title.

I mean, we would all like it to have been easy and get players in earlier. I think that's fair enough.

But ultimately the end of the window is the time to make a judgement.

    Absolutely.

I've not seen much evidence that we're low balling clubs on the regular like, other than Leicester regarding Maddison. A lot of it is just standard negotiating. A selling club sets a price, a buying club bids and they meet somewhere in the middle, I'm not sure why it causes so much angst amongst our fans.

I think it's been so long since we've genuinely tried to sign players worth negotiating for that they've completely forgotten how the whole thing works

The timeline is determined by the transfer window really, not the fans. If they get 2 or 3 more in before the end, it's a massive success.

Yes, which is exactly why they're still working on transfers.

While the fans say questions need to be asked because the approach isn't right. Yada yada yada.

I'm happy with who they seem to be targeting but not so happy with the execution of the deals from what has been reported. If we still finish the window with all the players we need then fair play, but we seem to making very heavy work of signing attacking players. IF the reports turn out to be true that we are constantly low balling clubs for their attacking players and it hasn't worked even once then questions would have to be asked of those in charge of recruitment.

Questions do not need to be asked man

They will get the deals done by the timeline that they deem necessary and not by the timeline determined by the fans.

Just to anyone mentioning Casemiro being 30, Thiago was 29 and a half when Liverpool signed him. He's a key player there now.

£20 million fee. And even with that he's had injury issues.

I don't know man. Not the biggest fan of signing players from slower leagues when they're older, especially from teams that are more dominant too.

Casemiro better be in great shape and ready to get around the pitch. He has a hell of a job on covering for who he will be playing alongside in their midfield, not to mention the defence behind them.

That's the best video of him I've seen. There's some really exciting touches in there which are not only about fancy tricks but also show some intelligence and awareness of other players around him.

    Get it done.

I'm telling you man. I'm really beginning to think he comes in and steals that wide right position.

Some of the things he was doing in that clip man. We don't have too many people with that kind of ability in our current team.

This is exactly what I was thinking yesterday.

£60 million for a 30 year old midfielder doesn't seem like a great move. Surely, there must be a younger version that can be had for that price.

That Ibrahim Sangare at PSV for example is available for around half of that I think.

I hear you, but If we had paid £50m for Botman in January, we'd all have thought it was still a great deal and we'd never have even given Dan Burn any thought.

Hindsight is a fine thing, and it's hardly a wild opinion to have in the middle of a scary relegation fight.

The opinion wasn't made back then but recently.

Easy to say in Hindsight. We were well in the shit when whoever said that about Botman. It’s easier this window to look at things in a calmer way

The comment was made recently and not in January.

The claim being that it would have saved us having to 'waste' budget on Burn.

The reality though, with the new information in that article, is that the same money has instead got us the two players.

correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t wenger move Henry up front because he was impressed with his movement and finishing?

Nope. Henry himself didn't think he was a good enough finisher to play through the middle.

    Quote

Wenger: "But at the start, it wasn't easy for him because I played him wide. One day I decided to play him through the middle. I said: 'Look, take the ball through the middle, we'll give you some passes, go ahead and score.' He said: 'You can play me through the middle but I can't score goals.' I said to him: 'I don't care, just play there. I don't want you especially to score goals, just try to play well."

So that either means we see him playing RW a lot, or we are going with Almiron, Fraser and Murphy till January at least.

There's been a ton of great stuff posted on Pedro on here now.

I more and more convinced that Almiron's place on that right hand side is going to be under serious threat from him, if he doesn't take advantages of the opportunities he's been getting there.

Longer term he may well take over from Wilson as a striker, but in the short term I think he may force his way into the team out wide. He has the work rate Almiron provides but looks a far more direct runner with the ball and does a great job in general link up play. Those Bruno through balls will be right on his stronger right foot too, and I don't see him not pulling the trigger like Almiron has failed to do a number of times now.

    From Caulkin's piece:

The message that they will not be suckered into paying over the odds has been received clearly (they were quoted £50million for Botman in January but ended up paying Lille closer to £36million for him last month).

If that isn't justification of their approach I don't know what is. It was ages ago so doesn't feel like it but Botman could still yet be the biggest/most impressive/most lasting acquisition we'll make this summer, even if two attackers come in.

Pretty sure someone on here said we should have just pushed the boat out for Botman in January, which would have meant paying that £50 million. £14 million more than what we ended up paying.

That difference in price has effectively allowed us to get an extra player in Dan Burn that has greatly improved our squad depth.

So easy to brush over and overlook though.

  15. I see people are now asserting that he is a 'poor finisher'. Do we really have enough information to be declaring that as fact?

There's a myriad of reasons as to why his numbers aren't higher. How have we come to the conclusion that he is a poor finisher exactly? My God

A weird one but as this guy is more of a number 10 who can play along the front and is not prolific he is definitely not a Wilson back up. But I think Ramos actually would be a great back up as he seems to know where the goal is.
I’d love to get both if possible, along with a loan or two.

We don't need goals from the bench. We have guaranteed Prem goals provider Chris Wood!

We paid out compensation to get Ashworth in early for the transfer window. Oops [emoji38]

Guy has come in to torture the fan base right up until the end of the window with rejected bids, at which point he'll shift Bruno on the last day ;D
