I wonder which midfielders we have that could effect a compact block? I'm assuming Fonseca is of the Poch mode and he likes to push up and press the opposition when we don't have the ball. Can you imagine that with Ritchie and Shelvey? Or Longstaff for that matter.

But Fonseca won't be a mug, he'll probably adapt to the players he's got to work with. At least he's got some football ideas, unlike our current coach who's "let's play" mantra is about as tactical as he gets.

Yes, exactly, The key thing is getting someone in there capable of actually thinking about these things and finding the right solutions for the players we have.

He looks like a world beater in those highlights. He's scored half his total goal's for us in one match there.

I remember watching that when he first signed and I thought we'd got a really talented prospect. In those highlights there's so much more going on around him though, always tons of players around him and ahead of him, creating space for him and options to pick out. Having a good manager is so incredibly important, it's crazy.

Bruce has had them in training today, he must be trying to impress the new gaffa

What a fraud man. No more off days now I presume. Was the suit yesterday part of the new professional Bruce too? Ridiculous stuff.

I said earlier in this thread that his philosophy is great, but I just don't think we've got the players to do attacking football, we'd not score enough goals get murdered on the counter. Could be very risky considering our league position.

I'm not so sure. A trio of Almiron, Willock and ASM behind Wilson should be able to cause teams some problems with better instructions for that foursome to follow. Lots of pace, running and dribbling in those 4, and Wilson, Max and Willock can finish when in good positions. Fraser should also be able to add something off the bench too in one of those attacking midfielder slots. Please lets not forget that up until now we still have not seen some trio from Almiron, Fraser, ASM and Willock ever play off Wilson at any point for some reason.

Regarding a defensive setup to help tighten us up that article on Fonseca talks about a very compact mid block he used at Shakhtar, which could be an option, and something we have never tried under Bruce. In actuality what have we tried under Bruce, other than just sit in our box and invite tons of pressure until we concede, because we don't have anyone upfield to release the ball to and get forward. Supposedly that is how you defend. It's ludicrous.

I know he's more of an attacking coach, and our defence is a fucking mess. But our 'attacking' is equally as pathetic, Fonseca would surely bring in a plan other than pass the ball to Saint-Maximin, inshallah.

That write up Manxst posted reads very well regarding his defensive ideas. Not sure he'd be that bad defensively tbh. Interesting that he was actually a centre back when he played too.

So Bruce says that he'd like to have clarity on his future. He also says he would like to carry on with the job. He says that any team in the bottom half of the table are fighting relegation and that is the position we were in when he walked through the door. He also says we have been fighting relegation for 6 years.

This guy obviously believes that our current situation has nothing to do with his management

Why is he still talking so much? For this reason alone they should sack him.

Put the groundsman in charge, whatever. Just send this guy packing please!

Would take Fonseca. Don't like the scoreline in the title of the video above, mind.

    I noticed that too

Beat them 2-1 with Shakhtar too at one point though.

  9. These lot are still missing Richarlison and DCL, and they still look a decent threat. Going to be so good once they both get back up and running.

They should have got something out of the game yesterday, but Iwobi was very disappointing. Looking like even Rafa can't make him more effective, which is not a good sign for Iwobi at all.

 prob not though he was right about the takeover a while back tbf to him. Dummett did go to school with my nephew, so fuck knows.

Man, I am desperate for that to be true now

I am getting very worried it's going to be some 'keep them up' PFM  dufus

That makes WAY more sense, we have zero fluidity, so that basically nullifies any usefulness Big Joe might have.

Yeah, I remember looking into what kind of player he was when he joined and I was a bit confused as to why we were using him as a target man. The video below was one of his better performances at Hoffenheim, and he's typically linking play deeper and then arriving late into the box.

Was he a CF at Hoffenheim? Couldn't he chest down our hoof balls to Wilson or something more useful than whatever the fuck he's doing now? Is this what Bruce's intention is?

This is all with the context that he learns to not trip over the ball or stumble into an opposing player 2 seconds after receiving it.

He was at Hoffenheim under that kid genius manager that is now at Bayern. The guy is that good that he made use of Joelinton effectively in their system.

I think they moved the ball much quicker and had a lot of movement and runners around him and so it allowed him to make much quicker decisions with the ball once he held it up, and then he would arrive late in the box.

Usually played with another quicker striker up top or in the hole behind a front two I think in variations of a 3-5-2/3-4-3 system.

I thought he was hilarious yesterday actually. The most Shelvey performance you could ever see. All that was missing was a direct freekick put either 90 foot over the bar or straight into the wall.

My mates who all support other clubs still all think he's a great player though

My friend who supports Arsenal complains about Xhaka all the time and then when discussing Newcastle lauds Shelvey!

Shelvey is a really really poor man's Xhaka for goodness sake!

They could do with some calls being returned.
The Independent has been told of how Amanda Staveley’s husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi attempted to get in touch with one big-name manager last week, only to be given short shrift. The coach, in short, had no interest in working with this Newcastle as it is and was puzzled by the nature of the approach.

Such circumstances were one big reason Steve Bruce was still in charge for Sunday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, that ended with the ignominy of both ends of the ground singing “sacked in the morning”.

    From the Independent:- https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/newcastle-takeover-relegation-steve-bruce-tottenham-b1940090.html

Need to get some football people involved pronto. I like that Mehrad is trying to get in a top manager though, as that is apparently his preference from the article. Might need some help from football people with contacts though.

  16. Allardyce blaming the fans again today I see. Apparently we were so bad defensively because 50,000 excited Geordies demand attacking football and it leaves the defence vulnerable

Imagine how clueless you have to be to say something like this, and this is someone that has been a manager for decades man. Apparently in football you can only either attack or defend and not be able to do both at least half decently as a team.

It's the exact same thing Bruce pushes after every single game. 'We've tried to change things by going on the front foot and this has left us open defensively now'. And so alternatively their solution is just to have ten men in our own box and have us lose by slightly fewer goals.

He would organise the defence, get us playing in a proper formation and have us hard to beat. I think he keeps us up comfortably and is also good enough to kick on next season

Yeah, on the whole I think Emery would be the best. Also has some experience with the league.

If we are looking at someone that is not under contract at another club, and who is a realistic and achievable hire at the minute,  I think it would have to be AVB as I think of the options available he is most likely to provide us with the balance of a solid defensive unit and decent play going forward.

  18. Considering we are going to have to pay off the incumbent, I don't think we'll be forking out money to get someone out of a contract.

Any of Fonseca, Favre or Villas-Boas, who are all available, should be able to do enough to keep us up and then have a chance to see if they can build on things further.
