It apparently took him two months to seal each of the LeJeune and Merino deals. As in two months on each deal separately! One of which involved a release clause and the other which was a simple loan

Rafa Benitez is furious after Newcastle failed to sign a single player during the final fortnight of the transfer window.

The Spaniard expected arrivals after offloading high-earners Emmanuel Riviere, Siem de Jong, Grant Hanley and Tim Krul.

A loan move for Southampton left back Matt Targett collapsed on Thursday evening, while the club conceded defeat in their pursuit of Chelsea’s Kenedy. Benitez had also wanted a goalkeeper and striker.

 

He has signed off from the summer having spent around £40million on six players and he believes owner Mike Ashley has not come good on promises he made over investment in May.

Only last week Benitez said he was no longer thinking of his job as a long-term project.

 

He is unlikely to quit — he would have to pay a year’s salary of £5m if he did — but there is the prospect of a club like West Ham offering to cover such a penalty should they want him.

Ashley does not want to lose Benitez but the club’s hierarchy are annoyed by the manager’s continued comments to the press.

It will be interesting to see what Benitez says when he faces the media ahead of next weekend’s trip to Swansea.

Why not just find someone with ability that is happy to work with the young players you prefer to buy, someone int he profile of the Huddersfield manager for example.

I don't think Benitez has a problem with buying young players. He just wants good players. Murphy and Merino are Benitez type players but also Ashley type players. I'm sure Nickson scouted them both at the U21 tournament. I'm sure we tried for more players of that ilk too but we didn't pay enough.

Rafa made a point of emphasising the importance of experience time and time again, and was made to think this would not be a problem.

He asked what the budget and wage allowance was and whether he could sign anyone that fit, and he was made to believe that would be fine,so why did it never come together?

MA wants young and relatively cheap. Even that Murphy fee was at the higher end of what he would want.

What exactly have the Gold|Sullivan|Brady axis got that is better than Ashley? Perhaps Rafa gets the  "f*ck you I am off" factor. Other than that they are equally as s*** as Ashley imo. This is the world we live in..

I have no doubt that MA has already schemed behind the scenes with them to take him off our hands. It is why he probably shut things down completely and didn't even pretend to back him anymore.

Think about how out of whack the transfer for Murphy was this summer. Spending £10 million on that kid who really hasn't done anything yet, simply because he is a young English emerging talent that could effectively go for 3 times his fee with a bit of success in a few years. So once again we hired a manager whose ambition was in no way aligned with what Mike Ashley wants to do as far as recruitment goes. Why the fuck bring him in then?!

If Rafa was looking at the likes of Robertson and Gibbs then it is clear there was a complete clash in approach. So fucking frustrating.

I've said it before here and it's a crying shame but there is absolutely no incentive for Ashley to invest. He feels with the current manager and squad we'll stay up (and if not can easily gain promotion) therefore why invest? We're miles away from a Champions League spot, it's free advertising for Sports Direct and qualifying for the Europa League or finishing higher up than say 17th in the Prem isn't worth the potential outlay.

 

The minimum is fine as long as you're not in the bottom three. TV money/parachute payments as long as you incomings match or exceed your outgoings is the way to go.

 

Depressing as f***, but from a business perspective the only way to make money before any potential sale. Plus an easy way to stick it into those who have slagged him off and called him part of the "cockney mafia".

He is 100% taking pleasure from just winding up the fans of the football club at this point. No question about it.

There is no other option but to empty that stadium each week to force him to sell promptly, because the media disgrace and the loss of money would be too much for him.
