If that was the case then we would be making a mistake to let him go, but nobody really has a clue if it is.

This And if we get relegated, then it'll be harder than last time to come straight back up Fair enough, the comparison wasn't great... but buying players isn't exactly like buying lightbulbs either! I want us to sign players as much as anyone, all I'm saying is that we know what the owner's policy is. We've all got opinions on whether it's right or wrong and to what degree - but it is what it is.

The club will never be self sufficient as a yo-yo club. It was self sufficient through the 90s with less transfer fees and far higher ground income (albeit lower wages too) when we were spending money to compete with the big boys. I appreciate things have changed re: Man City, Chelsea etc but the club no longer being able to compete with Everton, Spurs right down to Stoke City and Bolton? Nah sorry, not buying it. I agree, the question is whether we can get away with the strategy I suppose.

The new title is the most accurate yet, it's calmed me down a lot.

I hope you're joking nar... my mate said he had signed and was number 24, so i ordered the new blue top off sports direct website with his name on. he said he'd read the deal on some newcastle website You sir, are an idiot. Oh by the way, if you send me £100 I'll make sure he signs. i know i feel so stupid, i bet he takes number 22. This could be some of the best comedy ever. aye go on, laugh at my misfortune! nearly as bad as when i got ferdinand 9 on my top, and a week later that twat shearer signed and became number 9. Are you actually serious though? I thought the 'I bet he takes #22' line was an amazing punchline! nah am not serious, but i agree, the punchline was canny good! just wish this shit would hurry up and be done with!! Fair play

From Schweppes: I work at BBC Newcastle. I am not on the telly or anything like that. I am a whats known as an archiver. I assist with putting together stories. I am getting info from AP news wires and also sports journalists So he looks stuff up online and reports it as a source?

Is it not just a difference in policy Wullie? Previously the owners didn't mind the debt increasing, so allowed spending to continue. Ashley wants to make the club self-sufficient, so he's not sanctioning any increase in borrowing. Obviously the economic situation has worsened massively as well. Obviously you'd be silly to stop buying lightbulbs because you have a mortgage to pay. But equally you'd be silly to take out loads of credit to buy a plasma telly and a new car.

Newsflash - newspapers don't usually know anything about what's really going on with transfers.

You should be apologising for unlocking it mate.

Newcastle United v Aston Villa (the season starts here, maybe)

Hope its a good day for you guys. Some great memories of going to the game with my Dad, which might sound cliché, but it really is a great bit of bonding. My Dad had to nearly force me to go to my first game, I wasn't in to football at all. Then I fell asleep in the second half! Think it was a 3-1 cup victory over Sheff Wed, seem to remember Srnicek having a howler and dropping the ball for their goal. I might be making that up though, it's pretty hazy! [/offtopic] -
I doubt he's even fit, he never usually is.
-
We've already had the argument about whether our new policy is right or wrong though. I've been through grief about that, now I've reached acceptance. It is what it is, all transfer dealings have to be viewed through the 'we're skint' lens now.
-
You've planted seeds of doubt in my mind now Better let him clarify himself!

Nice one. I'm travelling up from London for it as well, unusual for me to get a game in this early in the season. Usually an away game comes first as well, haven't been to the first home game for years. -
Obviously the OM will want to accept a straight cash bid and sell him to Bremen, but he doesn't strike me as the kind of lad who'll go anywhere he doesn't fancy. It might be physically impossible to get him to write his name on the contract!

I agree, i still think we will stay up.....i have to think that or i would just be some daft t*** sitting in a crowd for no reason but its not panic to see and discuss the situation as it stands imo A lot of people just assume that anyone with a different opinion is an idiot. That's a problem for most on here, including myself at times... Obviously for some more than others though. Eh? Think he was agreeing with you.

But oldtype, that's basically what football is like for 99% of clubs. We support them because we pretty much have to. I want us to progress, but we have to face that it will have to happen slowly. We've gone from Champions League to bottom half relatively quickly, it can be turned around as well.
-
I am as well, I'm definitely more optimistic after the game than before it. Strange for a 3-0 defeat obviously.
-
People think we're going to survive > patronising claims about forgiving Ashley and having their heads in the clouds. It's pointless to make meta posts like this, it works bother ways... it's all about opinions.

We should get rid of that jean luc smilie, it's ridiculous.
-
And the last thing Wenger needs is another creative midfielder.
-
Yes and no imo. We look a bit more settled in defence, we look to have a decent pair of wingers this time around, and Carroll may be able to get 10+ goals this year if we're lucky. However, Harper looks too easy to beat, we have a clear problem with the right back slot, our midfielders are all very slow, lacking in creativity, and none of them are good at protecting the back defense, and aside from Carroll, we're probably going to be hopeless in attack. Furthermore, if we get a couple of injuries to the likes of Jonas/Enrique/Carroll, we're probably fucked. True, but we had all of the those problems last time around. I'm not saying we're brilliant, I'm just saying we're better than before. Bearing in mind that if we had managed to pick up a single point more over 38 games, we would have survived last time anyway. It could go wrong, but it could easily go fine.
