Fair point, I've always agreed that having a DM capable of starting moves and breaking up play is very important and a feature of many top, top teams. Not sure it would maximise Cabaye's usefulness, though.

He's even made Benayoun an aggressive player. I swear he just puts him in the first 11 to try and show he isn't a hoofball merchant. Doesn't work if you don't give him the ball and sub him off every game, though.

As unenjoyable as this season has been I'm still grateful we aren't constantly in turmoil and having to watch Souness/Allardyce/Kinnear/Roeder teams. That was a grim period.

Would be interesting if our players were fairly disciplined in their positions. If Santon/Ferguson decide to wander there would be epic gaps. Also, not sure about having Cabaye so deep. Tiote is decent in that sort of role and he's not too bad on the ball as well as being a destroyer. He's an idiot, though.

It's a relatively recent thing that's crept into the game. Keegan for example would generally always play his strongest team in all competitors yet these days managers seem terrified of "burn out" or other such pap. Top players at the peak of fitness can play twice a week, no doubt. You get the added bonus of consistency too. Indeed. I don't play anywhere near professionally obviously but I'm able to play 3 full matches a week. Plus I don't have the benefit of massages, conditioning and £35k every week

This Europe stuff is guff. Players should be able to play 2 matches in a week ffs. Pardew's right to ignore that aspect.
