Good post. Southgate was/is a caretaker manager in every sense. Utterly vanilla, a seemingly decent chap who doesn't want to rock the boat and steadies the ship, but someone who is in no way qualified to be managing at an elite level for longer than a couple of weeks. It's an indictment of the ineptitude of the FA that no sort of plan was made at the time of his appointment and no succession pathway is put in place once Southgate inevitably goes.
