  13. Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has been confirmed as Manchester City manager. The 59-year-old has signed a three-year deal worth a reported £9m - and is set to be given a £50m transfer kitty. The appointment was triggered by former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's acquisition of more than 75% of City shares. "I'm delighted and honoured to be City manager. It's an exciting challenge," the Swede told the club website. He added: "I've already started making preparations for the new season. I want to deliver a team that our fantastic fans can be proud of." It is believed Tord Grip will again be the Swede's right-hand man. Grip was Eriksson's number two during the former Lazio, Sampdoria and Benfica's six-year tenure as England manager. Roland Anderson, who is currently Sweden's assistant manager, is also expected to join Eriksson's backroom team. Eriksson has succeeded Stuart Pearce, who was sacked at the end of last season. The Swede, who met the City players and took a training session on Wednesday, has been out of football since leaving the England job after the 2006 World Cup. The club's chief executive, Alistair Mackintosh, said: "I'm delighted that Sven has agreed to join the club as we move into an exciting new era. "His vast experience of managing top clubs to success around Europe is one of the qualities that attracted us to him. "He also knows the Premier League inside out during his time as national team manager." REPORTS BBC SPORT
  14. Martins picking up that bird on the pitch has got to be the funniest moment at a match or the when the linesmen got took out by a player (cant remember who)
  15. i have saw Baba play well for a 1/4 of his games for us but hes just never stayed fit! i think if we get Baines we could give Wigan Baba like someone said just above oviously if we payed about £3million and Baba for Baines would be a bargain
  16. i would prefer gudjohnson than owen as martins is a goalscorer and can set things up. OWEN cant hes just a goalscorer also owen has got to try and keep fit all season as his injuries are getting on my nerves now has this club ever had good luck with injuries?
  17. Aston Villa are set to complete the signing of West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker for about £8m. The two clubs are believed to have finally agreed on a fee for the 23-year-old and he is expected to seal a four-year contract at Villa Park. He will clinch the move after a medical but he will go on holiday instead of starting training because he played for England Under-21s this summer. Reo-Coker will be manager Martin O'Neill's first signing of the summer. says bbc sport
  18. Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has passed a medical at Liverpool and is set to complete his £26.5m move to Anfield on Wednesday. Torres, 23, has flown back to Madrid where he will hold a press conference to say goodbye to Atletico fans. Liverpool have agreed a club record deal with Atletico and BBC Sport understands the Spain striker will sign a six-year contract. The Reds will then target Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze. £26.5 million is alot of money for a striker
  19. Ken Bates' proposed buyback of Leeds United is to be challenged by HM Revenue & Customs. The announcement comes a day after the news that the administrators at the football club had persuaded Mr Bates to raise his offer to creditors. A Leeds United spokesman said it did not yet have all the details but it was "confident of a positive outcome". Leeds went into administration on 4 May, before Mr Bates narrowly won backing to buy it back on 4 June. 'Business as usual' While Mr Bates, the club's chairman, was able to get the backing of creditors to buy back the club, it seems HM Revenue & Customs, which is owned £7.7m in unpaid taxes, was far from happy. Its challenge to the plan was made just before a 1600 BST deadline. "The club can confirm that the Inland Revenue have served notice of their intentions to challenge the CVA [Creditors' Voluntary Agreement]," said a Leeds United spokesman. "We do not have all the details as yet and do have a number of options available to us. "We remain confident of a positive outcome, despite this disappointing news, and will carry on with business as usual in the meantime." Monday's announcement that Leeds was increasing the amount of money it was offering creditors from 1p in the £1 to 8p has been seen by commentators as a failed move to try to persuade HM Revenue & Customs not to call in the lawyers. 'Liquidation risk' With its debts of £35m, Mr Bates has previously claimed that any legal challenge by HM Revenue & Customs could force the club into liquidation. Earlier on Tuesday, he told Yorkshire Radio: "If there is a legal challenge, it could take two or three months to get to court and be decided. "In the meantime, who is going to pay to run the club?" Leeds United's administrators at accountancy giant KPMG have insisted throughout that they have acted within the laws of insolvency.
