In the Premiership, there were 19 away trips, totalling a combined return journey of 7276 miles. That's an average of 382.95 miles per journey.

In the Championship, there are 23 away trips, totalling a combined return journey of 9756 miles. That's an average of 424.17 miles per journey.

So it's around 40 miles more per journey on average, although take off Plymouth and the average comes down to about 401 miles.

Not hugely different.

Starting to hope its FFS, if it was him I would be pretty confident he would do the business to get up back up in 1 season. Ill of course have my worries about him, but right now I just want this club to be in the Prem again more than anything.

Come on people. Harper is more than good enough for the Championship. Seriously, look at some of the keepers who are doing just fine in the division.

 

As for Krul, I'm sure he's a fine prospect but ultimately we have absolutely no evidence that he's ready for first team football other than 90 fantastic minutes against Palermo three years ago. He should have to prove himself like everyone else. We can't just knee-jerk and throw him in over Harper just because he's become everybody's new favorite scapegoat.

 

I'm all for giving him the Cup games regardless of opposition next season, but Harper keeps the number 1 shirt by default unless Krul has an bsolutely mindblowing pre-season.

Yep. I find it quite bizarre that people are trying to blame Harper?

He's not as good as Shay Given, but he's hardly the root of our problem. He'll be one of the better Championship goalkeepers, and there's no need to take the risk of having a relatively unproven, but very promising goalkeeper in there.

Harper first choice with Krul as backup is fine IMO.

Just sell already or stay.

Needs to be sorted out ASAP, so everyone can move forward.

In a nutshell.

Bear in mind that it wasn't entirely the players fault that we went down. We do have a few solid players who could easily play in a top 6 team, and we must try to keep them no matter what it takes. If we let 90% of our squad go in this window we will be stuck in the CC league (or worse) for a very, very long time.

 

I'd argue that this mentality is even more dangerous.  An owner and a manager can only f*** you up so badly.  Lots of teams have had bad owners and average coaching.  We were let down very, very badly by our players.  We are well overdue a clear out - we've earned one on the basis of this past season. 

 

Keep a few senior professionals Shearer trusts and can work with, Steven Taylor, hopefully Bassong or Enrique if we can manage it (stability is important in defence) and then gut the rest of the squad.  Promote young, hungry players and get some pace back in the team.  Get a team that can counterattack like Sir Bobby's old sides used to.  But most of all use the new faces to get some team spirit back in the side.  I don't ever want to see a team as careless, exhausted and lifeless as we were in that last 45 minutes against Villa.  There is simply no excuse.

It wasn't entirely the players fault - but they have to shoulder a large part of the responsibility for it.

It would be alright if they were putting the effort in week in, week out. but the fact is they weren't. They were too happy just to be 'injured' or go out and not even try. Those are the kind of players we don't need at Newcastle United.

Of course, the players aren't responsible for what went on behind the scenes, and its' not their fault that we didn't have any cover in the full back areas, and that our midfield was lacking creativity.

We didn't spend as much as we brought in last season and why shouldn't the money from players sold in the following close season be available for transfers?  If I was Shearer I'd be demanding it.  They're looking to save the money lost from not being in the Premiership by cutting the wage bill, so they shouldn't need to make a profit on transfers.

If we make £30m from transfers, we'll get £10m-£15m to spend, which is understandable.

 

Even if we save £30m a year on wages, we're still £25m a year down from TV revenue etc. Parachute payment of £11m means that's probably £14m down. That has to come from somewhere.

 

Also add to the fact that our operating income will be significantly less (merchandising/tickets/match day income/sponsorships).

 

Going down means we make less money but only if we then spend the same money would we be in more debt.  We made £41 million from prize money and media last season according to the accounts by the way.  Parachute payments were £11.5 million for ther last two seasons, I had heard that was going up again for the start of next season but that's uncomfirmed.  Even if they don't chop £35 million off the wage bill and we'll have balanced the books.

TV revenue is worth around £40m to those clubs in the Premiership, in the Championship it's about £2.5m.

Prizemoney is significantly less as well.

You can't not include the money for Given based on how much we may more may not have gotten up front   I very much doubt we've paid the money for Gutierrez yet and we may have only paid part of the transfers for any of the other players we've signed.  The fact is the money is guarenteed, wether its in or out.  So that's £33 milliion brought in and £24.9 million spent.

And considering we're operating at a loss of around £10-£15m a year.....

And then you have signing on fees to consider for the players we brought in, which is probably in the region of about £6m...

Ok, just looking through every club in the Championship, and here are the players I've heard of and know a bit about:

Start with the teams that have been relegated:

Norwich: No-one really takes my fancy

Southampton: Adam Lallana

Charlton: Darren Ambrose, Jonjo Shelvey (probably out of our price range and will go to a Prem club though)

Best of the rest.....

Mark Beevers: 19 year old centre half from Sheffield Wednesday. Very highly rated. Price might be a stumbling block.

Giles Barnes: Went to Fulham on loan but didn't impress so he's back off to Derby. Probably get some interest from a Premiership club though.

Freddy Eastwood: I've heard of him and he's been decent whenever I've seen him, but it looks like he didn't do much last season.

Billy Sharp: 23 year old striker that is currently at Sheffield United. Majority of what I know from him is couresy of FM though haha.

Joe Mattock: Currently playing for Leicester as a LB.

Lewis McGugan: 20 year old central midfielder, currently at Nottingham Forest. He's one of these outstanding Championship players who probably isn't quite ready for the step-up to the Premiership yet.

Joe Ledley: He's a gun. Probably again though, ready for a Premiership club to come in for him.

Ross McCormack: One of the leagues top scorers last season

Victor Moses: Young 18 year old winger/striker from Crystal Palace

Billy Jones: 22 year old versatile player. Can play anywhere across the back four or even in midfield.

Jason Scotland: Very good goal-scoring record in this league.

If he stays I'm getting his name on the back of the new home kit

Enrique - £3m

Coloccini - £6m

Bassong - £6m

Beye - £1m

Jonas - £5m

Barton - £1m

Martins - £6m

Smith - £2m

Apparently Sevilla want him for £4m, but we're holding out for £6m.

Split the middle and make it £5m and it's a good deal for all parties.

That makes it 3 players who are staying for next season, brilliant.

The simple fact is that few of us watch the Championship regularly, and none of us have seen Ryan Taylor actually play there. He could be useful, he could be shit.

 

Based on the fact that Stephen fucking Carr was the best right back in the division this year, I'm inclined towards the former.

I've seen him play in the Championship. He was good.

We don't really have many options, he'll be a good squad player.

Why would Doyle or Hunt join us? They want out of this league desperately, theres more chance of promotion staying at Reading next year than coming here and would both cost a fortune.

Reading have a better chance at promotion? With Coppell gone I'm reasonably sure next year will be a rebuilding campaign for them. The likes of Doyle and Hunt probably can and will be tempted to leave.

 

I would guess they'd be more likely to join a promoted club who'll take a chance on them though.

 

How are you planning on signing some of these players exactly? I just read Newcastle earned £41 million through TV this season, and next season it will be a mere £2.5 million.

 

The players you sell won't go for inflated prices because Europe knows you need the money.

 

Bosman rulings or part exchange transfers is where you guys should be looking.

Parachute payments/money we get from transfers/money saved on wages.

We still won't have a lot, £5-10m isn't out of the question.

If he's got a bad attitude, he's the kind of player we need to stay clear of.

If we get an offer of £6m plus for him we have to accept.

Can't knock back that sort of money in the Championship, especially in our state.
