I think if you're a poor footballer it's a good career move to have a wacky hairstyle. People will notice/remember you for it and largely forget how useless you are. Alexei Lalas comes to mind. It works if you're good as well because it can elevate you to rockstar status. e.g. Carlos Valderrama

Should not underestimate this as well as the Sammy connection. Shola is probably a really good guy to have around for a manager that came in under difficult circumstances.
