I dont understand why the conversation even gets swayed towards whether the players are right or wrong, or whether we should have matched the wages another silly club is willing to offer. The issues are: We are letting go of our key proven players with no solid replacements firmly lined up Barton did not need to be made available for free a year early when having him would likely have helped both our level of success/turnover this season in all competitions

Well hey, atleast we've given Shola Ameobi a 3 year contract extension. Not like that money could have gone towards keeping any of these other players in anyway.

How is he to blame? Another club rates him higher than we do and is willing to offer him what we wont. Everyone would make the same decision

So the only players who actually want to stay, we wont keep because of their age. Then the younger ones who actually succeed who we potentially do want to sign up, will then be offered better contracts by more successful clubs anyway. Which leaves us in in the nice little middleground of only being able to hold onto average players in general. HAPPY DAYS

While i dont buy the hands are tied stuff 100%, they are offering a good long term contract and were not, he has to weigh that up, can hardly blame him really. Its as simple as that. Theyre offering him the best contract and are likely the only club willing to offer him a long term contract at his age. They have to do this to get a player of his ability, just as West Ham had to. Ofcourse hes going to take it, even if he goes down he'll believe other clubs will be in for him still. Its an obvious choice all footballers would make.
