Would have been the ideal situation given the circumstances of the last few months. Would have been the sensible approach for me yes. Think most would understand us being unwilling to offer him what he wants on a long term deal. To push him out a year early is underestimating the potential benefits of keeping him around quite largely id say.

Top post It's true: from an ownership standpoint, the benefits of placing a few places higher in the Premiership are disproportionately miniscule compared to the money you'd need to spend to do so. Near 1m per league position isnt it. So finish 3 places higher with Barton than without & he pays off his contract + more. Keep in mind that 3 more points last season & we'd have been on the same points total as the team 4 places higher up. Thats ignoring the potential for a better squad to do better in cups and earn more again by getting further. Also the benefit of just generally having our club do better all round in terms of how that affects the way other players & our own would feel about our potential to achieve.

Not this month. August 2010, he intended to have that amount paid back a year ago. The 16.5m is repayable from now, as its been a year.

How can it be a joke when even on a free only clubs like QPR and West Ham are the only ones to show interest? Did you even think this through? Why dont you atleast attempt to consider possible reasons for this beyond "Joey Barton must currently be shit" ?

Why is this even being debated. This is true of every single footballer??? Who gives a f***. We are giving away a first team player for free a year early for no reason whatsoever. Wake up man. I totally agree we shouldn't be giving him away for free, that's not what i was saying. But at the end of the day, for all the time he has been available, only QPR have popped in to show any interest? I think it proves Joey isn't as wonderful as he thinks he is. It proves that we have signed these players to bigger contracts than many other clubs are willing to. They are all in the same position in regards to being aware of Barton & Nolans age and they arent all as stupid as West ham & Sam Allardyce.

I wouldn't be worried if he did, he's been distinctly average for quite a few games now and his free kicks are crap. Do you think that maybe part of the reason he's been arguably below par (not sure I agree but it's certainly debatable) is because of the way this club's idiot hierarchy have treated him? That perhaps morale is more of a problem than the ability which he showed for large parts of last year? I don't know, was morale a problem for his first 3 years here? What most people seem to forget is that he's been here for 4 years and been good for about half a season. I think he can be a good player when he's really fired up, he can also do idiotic things. Like I said I'd prefer to keep him as a squad player, but he's not a player I'd be gutted to see go. As a squad player, ignoring that hes currently making our starting line ups then. Also ignoring any form of change in character that has happened during this time or injuries & general destabilization of the club. Just generally ignoring any kind of sensible reasoning that involves there being no reason for Barton not to stay at the solid level hes been playing at & being a good player for us.

You're blind if you miss what Barton gives us. Hes already been one of our most influential players this season in both games & only in a beneficial way to us. Gosling has done nothing whatsoever yet to be considered in the same league, beyond blind hope that he'll perform.

Good news then. I mean sure he'd probably cover his wages this year by helping us to a higher league position, increasing our status as a club and giving us a greater chance at replacing him or keeping our other best players. Hes also happy to stay & theres no other benefit atall for letting him go a year early. Apart from that, this makes complete sense.

Does the TV money not cover our existing wage bill? For any of the doubters, cast an eye of the previous available NUFC finances in black and white, you will see there is rather more money to spend than we are being lead to believe. That said, what is happening is the loan(s) put into the club from Ashley are simply being repaid, but rather than being transparent, we are being fed lies and being taken for fools by being told the money will be spent on players. Had the club been honest, I think we would all have been a lot happier about what is happening now with our eyes open. I've posted this previously with links to proofs of finances on another thread a month ago. Ashley is simply reducing the debt of the club to make it a more attractive asset to sell.

Routledge had a far better game than he did on saturday. Anyway, i do think hes got ability. Bit dissapointed by the way he just looked sad & weak when things went against him, didnt see much passion. Needs to step it up again.

Not been mentioned but looks pretty solid next to Colo. Put in a great block at one point from a potentially goalbound shot from gyan & won most in the air like Colo. Like the look of their partnership atm.

Looked really calm, hope he keeps that up will only have a positive effect on defence.
