Was a strong standard tonight, very close between the teams. I felt we did well, and still finished 6 points or something behind the (worthy) winners.

The coefficient is system of ranking leagues based on European performance across all the countries' participating clubs over the previous 5 years. Russian teams in the last 5 years have broadly outperformed Portuguese sides.
Overall I'd say this is a more effective measurement of performance than what you think should be the case 'off the top of your head'.
