Doesn't work like that, I'm the same and I fucking hate them and hope to never have to see one in my life. I've embraced what it is to be a Newcastle fan. I guess it's down to the fact that Brazil has a football culture and I can relate unlike the US

That was really a great team, perfect mix of the old guard (Sanneh, Agoos, Stewart), guys at their peak (McBride, Moore, Lewis, Pope), and the next generation (Donovan, Beasley, O'Brien, Cherundolo).

In what way? We're proud of our players and want them to do well. I don't say we overrate our players anymore than English fans overrate English players. American players are still highly undervalued and disrespected by many fans and clubs in this league, for whatever reason. But for the most part, American players have enjoyed successful PL careers whenever they've come over.

WC2002 was what got me hooked on the game. I had played all growing up but hadn't really followed it much. Donovan, Clint Mathis and his crazy douchebag mohawk, Beasley tearing down the wing. Those wins against Portugal and Mexico man, electric stuff. Great tournament for us. And then we sucked mightily in Germany.

I think there's definitely some hesitation by many Newcastle fans to expand globally, for fear of the history and tradition of this club being lost to some degree. Which I think is unfounded (especially since the biggest threat to this club's tradition has been its owner, more than foreign influence of any kind).

Like it or not, it's a global game (/business) and the PL is at the very pinnacle. Teams that accept that will do well.

He's got a point. I know the Toon faithful don't give a flying fuck of the club's popularity in the States, but a big opportunity is there and Newcastle is getting left behind. And that doesn't mean the club necessarily has to go out and buy American players to make an impact. Hardly in fact. Just making an effort to market a little better over here would do wonders. Sure you'll find plenty of Newcastle supporters in the U.S., but most have some connection to the team or city. Your average American football fan isn't going to choose to follow Newcastle over the big clubs or teams with American players.

He's comfortable where he is and hasn't really felt the need to prove himself in Europe I guess. He's had a remarkable international career, including great performances at 3 WCs. Is he a starter on a Champions League side? Of course not, same with Dempsey. But pick a mid-table team and he'd be just fine there. True, but he could have been so much more. He needed to play at a different level regularly to develop into what he could have been. I'm not really sure what more he could've been. I don't know if he ever had potential to be a superstar who could've played for a perennial CL contender. He might've squeezed out a bit more playing in Europe, but in terms of producing for the national team, I'm not sure what else we could want from him. Guy has 50+ goals and assists. As you said, attitude/motivation was always his biggest issue. Maybe if he had more drive...

Sorry, I just don't have some visceral hatred for Sunderland. Never been there, never met anyone from there. I consider myself a Newcastle fan and respect the rivalry, but that's about it.

He's from SoCal, gets to play in his hometown. Like Navas playing for Sevilla for so long.

Corona's a nifty player. Can play AM or out on the wing. Good ball skills and vision, he should be a mainstay for the national team for a while.

U.S. always has mental defensive lapses against the minnows. Probably could've/should've had 6-7 goals tonight as well. Whatever. Cuban players just gave up the last 5 minutes or so, pathetic to watch. Shea was horrible. The worst I've seen him play ever. Granted he's just coming off an injury and hasn't played regular minutes in months, but he's a bench player at this point. I've changed my view on Wondo. Guy has excellent movement and knows how to score. Guess he just needed that first goal to get his confidence going. Barring a turbo-shit run of form over the next year, he's a virtual lock for the World Cup roster, imo. How good is Donovan, man. Guy could still walk into the starting XI for most PL sides. Good performances from Mix, Beckers, Gooch, and Beltran especially. Slow start but who the fuck cares, they came back in the second half and put a beating on Cuba.

Starting XI vs. Cuba: Rimando; Beltran, Orozco, Onyewu, Castillo; Corona, Beckerman, Holden, Shea; Donovan, Gomez
  21. Norwich, like Sunderland, are at least making moves to improve their squads. Which is more than we can claim at this point.
  22. Fer is an improvement over any of the players they were playing in central midfield, and RVW is an upgrade over Holt and Jackson. Snodgrass, Bassong, and Pilkington are decent players too, imo. These moves won't vault Norwich into the Top 8, but they're not relegation fodder anymore.
  23. Amorebieta seems a good signing for them on paper, but I've not seen him play a whole lot.
