Yep, that entirely part of the town could do with serious renovation. And imagine the footfall Sven’s would get on the way to the ground - a traditional local business
-
yeah, I know. You’ll find I’m far less arsed re that part of Leazes Park, particularly if the demolished SJP was turned into landscaped parkland to replace what was lost. But it would still have a fun time getting through planning.
-
I still think somewhere like the current arena site would be more likely, particularly for planning approvals etc. Redevelopment of a run down area while maintaining the city centre element (as well as better access to the better watering holes - imagine walking along from the Quayside to the match?) would be the ideal. It is closer to Central station too - and I’m aware that it’s further from Monument, but it’s often forgotten that the majority of people from Newcastle live to the west of the Monument station - most can’t actually get a Metro.
-
Yep, with you 100%. Soft landscaping of the current SJP - effectively extending Leazes Park - always sounded good to me. John Hall wanted to use the existing SJP for Newcastle / Gosforth Rugby Club when we owned them if I remember right? Maybe a vastly reduced SJP could be used for the women’s side + youth teams etc
-
Yes, I know - that’s not what I’m saying. I’m suggesting that they know a rebuild at the current SJP site is not feasible - but they’ve asked the question to test the water. There is nowhere for us to go for a couple of seasons. edit: I don’t mean test the water on a SJP rebuild. That’s not going to happen. I mean new stadium generally. It’s an act of cynicism.
-
Yep, if permission is granted there’s nowt wrong with it as a solution. I don’t think permission would be though, as that part of Leazes Park is listed too …
-
Likewise - though I don’t think they’re serious re a new ground at SJP, because literally no-one would have an issue with it. They’re testing the water on a new ground full stop.
-
Surely at this point every has to be aware that the survey was complete bollocks, too? ‘Renovate or a new stadium at the site of the current SJP’. Why would anyone have an issue with a new stadium at SJP? The question is obviously loaded.
-
That resistance was NIMBYs and Mackems. Leazes Park remains a perfect solution, for exactly the reasons you’ve outlined. Perhaps in the days of social media it’ll be harder for those fuckers to stand on Sunderland high street asking for signatures to block it (they were still vastly outnumbered despite those tactics)
-
Yeah, that’s pretty much my view too. SJP isn’t the same as the ground that I first started going to as a kid - and that ground isn’t the one that my dad first went too. And as my first game (that I remember) was in 1987, ten years later the ground was completely different, and ten years after that completely different again. I was never keen on the 2000 redevelopment, though I was of course happy that it increased capacity. What’s sometimes forgotten is that at that point it meant we had the second biggest ground in the country (and we filled it). Today, we’re something like 7th or 8th. If we want to genuinely compete on a long term basis, we need a new ground.

All you will ever need to know about the mackems are these two things: That they had several seasons in a row finishing below 40 points in the PL, but they beat us half a dozen times in a row, and therefore those are their glory years. They will be telling tales of this sixty years hence to their great-great-grandchildren (they breed them early in Sunderland) round the camp fire Also, they have a thread going on rtg asking whether they would rather get promotion or beat the Mags in the FA Cup. It’s a landslide win for beating the mags on there They are utterly obsessed, which is what makes this stuff all the funnier - they believe we are too, but we do it for piss-taking. There is a genuine rage within that lot -

Imagine having a thread about a shop whose main store is in Newcastle sponsoring the local football club … -

That moment when I had to ask myself ‘who the fuck is Cirkin?’ That’s not a question most football fans would ask about Trippier or Almiron. Absolutely delusional. -
That’s a proper football kit. If they could just get rid of that Soccer AM star above the crest, it would be close to perfect

Will Still be in the second division next season

If (massive if) you’re posting on here something as fucking awful as that tweet, it feels important to caveat it with something like ‘look at what one of our stupid cunts has written on Twitter’.
-
Honestly, you might be shocked if people were given the choice. Newcastle’s character and beauty is based around the sandstone architecture. It’s why it looks so much better than, say, Sunderland. Get rid of that and replace it with red facing brick, glass, steel and concrete and you’re Anywheresville, UK.

Leazes Terrace had been there for decades when the first match kicked off at SJP. And it is cultural vandalism to tear down listed buildings. You’re also assuming that every Geordie feels the same re SJP, and of those every NUFC supporter feels the same sentiment re SJP. They don’t.
-
Haha yep was just thinking about the ‘Ship of Theseus’ (Trigger’s Broom) a few moments ago - I think we can see where NO members sit on whether it’s the same ship / broom or not. You can probably tell from me that it’s a different ship / broom.
-
You can’t be confident at all - there is nothing re the KSA govt or PIF that suggests that sentiment plays any role in their thinking. Again, I make reference to the area surrounding the Kaaba, which makes Las Vegas look classy
-
Haven’t seen polls to confirm this, but perhaps. But my dad’s generation gets sentimental about piss-in-your pockets, crumbling stands and the infested with casual violence of SJP of the 60s and 70s. I’m pretty sure a lot of it is nostalgia for their own past.
-
Yeah, that’s fair enough. And I can only speak for me, of course - though I do think that should we leave, people would likely get over the emotional hump quickly. Some people also do react like this re the badge, mind you - despite the fact that since the PL breakaway Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Man City, Leeds, Spurs, Sheff Wed, Sunderland, and other big (or historically big) clubs have also changed their badges - sometimes more than once - with little or no fuss.
-
T Dan Smith was imprisoned for his crimes before I was born, but his name lives on in complete infamy. It inspired one of the best knows dramas set in Newcastle. No-one is stopping progress by doing it; no-one is stopping a city growing; you’re simply advocating cultural vandalism because you’re not keen on your football club playing in a slightly different spot.
