Local Hero/Going Home - Bring it back?

Recommended Posts

Insipid .Music to slit your wrists to.

It was freddies song,it was his idea,so I was told.It was thought to be the perfect reference to Shearer.

The club has been cleansed  from top to bottom.

We've got a new owner , a new manager and a new team. There is no need to hang on to anything from that era now.

A remix of 'Welcome to the pleasure dome', even the lyrics work well

As a non-Geordie I thought it was one of the classiest things about your club. No lyrics, no fireworks, no overblown pomposity just a damn fine piece of music which said "I can only be in St. James' Park".

Nice to hear that from a fan of another club tbh. :)

Just out of interest mods, will the results of this poll be presented to the club when they interact with Newcastle Online? or is it just a general poll for the site?

Probably be mentioned as an overwhelming proportion in relation to the point about the track, can't see why not.

Re-reading the thread it appears T-T has already asked this, but does anyone know when we first started playing Going Home as we run out? Any particular reason why? Seems strange that it's so well known as being our tune yet these basics aren't so.

Think it was the first season up in the prem. Not 100% sure though.

With the Saxaphone on full blast, it always gave me the impression of the climax of some dodgy daytime soap or TV movie, sailing into the sunset all and all that.

Or even worse a scene in a Porno movie, and you know what type of scene I'm talking about.

I think its a brilliant song for the players to come out to. The crowd would all rise to their feet when it came over the pa and wouldn't sit down until it ended when we all cheered. Now because of the crap tannoy system I still can't work out if there is a tune to the Sham 69 song or whether they are just shouting "united, united". Bring back the local hero song!

Don't think that is true - Local Hero was being played long before Shearer signed OR Shepherd became Chairman.

I like it at the end where it goes 'Dumma dumma dum' and every goes 'Howaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, you fucking cunts' or whatever. No idea why it shoeldn't be played, just cos' it's cheesy sax music doesn't mean it's not awesome.

It's the perfect ending. There's no fade out, there's no blown guitar solo, it just ends and everyone in the stadium at that moment errupts.

The facial cumshot?

One of my mates was best man at a wedding once and switched CDs in the stereo thing. After the vows were exchanged the bride and groom kissed to the sentimental wedding classic that is... 'Donald where's ya troosers'

I'd prefer it to be saved for a handful of matches each season.

Playing it before every game means it loses its value.

I disagree. I think it's part of our identity. Either play it every home game or not at all.

How?

Its a cheesy song written by a Scotsman for a Scottish film IIRC.

I don't recall NUFC being in Scotland.  ;)

When was it made? Early 80's? What did we do before then? When was the 1st time it was played, who decided that we adopted it? (really would like to know where it all stems from if anyone can answer, ta)

People over rate this song, its boring, dull and uninspiring. A new era could easily bring a new song, something with a bit of passion and charisma. Its not our culture, we can get rid of it, it doesn't define us by any mean.

Load of s****. It's not about the connection to the area, if it was then we'd have Jimmy f****** Nail singing Crocodile f****** Shoes. It's about the way it gets the crowd up and creates an atmosphere.

If you can put forward an alternative song that would be just as good i'm all ears.

How about Big River by Jimmy Nail?

Its all about the Tyne and far more appropriate than some dirge written by a scottish/american/geordie wannabe

Walking on cobbled stones, little bits of skin and bone

Jumping on a tram car for a ride

I can remember when, I was a just a boy of ten

Hanging around the old Quayside.

Now all the capstans and the cargo boats

And Stevadores are gone

To where all the old ships go

But memories, just like the sea live on

'Cause that was when coal was King

The river was a living thing

And I was just a boy but it was mine

The coaly Tyne.

This was a big river

I want you all to know

That I was proud

This was a big river

But that was long ago

That's not now, that's not now

My father was working man

He earned our living with his hands

He had to cross the river every day

He picked up his Union card, out of the Neptune yard

Mouths to feed and bills to pay

There came a time for him to sail across the sea and far away

And finally when the war was won

They brought him home and home he stayed

And when his days were done

Under a golden sun

They took him back to where he longed to be

Back to the sea

This was a big river

I want you all to know

That I was proud

This was a big river

But that was long ago

That's not now, that's not now.

The Neptune was the last to go

I heard it on the radio

And then they played the latest number one

But what do they do all day

And what are they supposed to say

What does a father tell his son?

If you believe that there's a bond between our future and our past

Try to hold on to what we have

We build them strong, we built to last

'Cause this is a mighty town

Build upon solid ground

And everything they've tried so hard to kill

We will rebuild.

This is a big river

I want you all to know I'm so very proud

This is a big river

But that was long ago

That's not now

This is a big, big river

And in my heart I know it will rise again

The river will rise again.

PS anyonesuggesting crap from Top Gun should be played needs to be shot with sh1te

Bring it back, it's much better than the crap that gets played at most places. It's not even important if it's any good as a piece of music, it was our piece of music, it had significance. Look at Everton, they come out to the fucking Z-Cars theme tune, it's shit, but do you think they'd get rid of it!?! Would they fuck, and they'd be right not to. I'd much rather the lads ran out to something crap that had meaning and was ours, rather than some plastic "crowd-pleasing" bollocks, like what I imagine (can't actually remember at the moment) Boro run out to. It's not wrestling, it's football, we shouldn't need a tune to get us up for it!!

That or get a decent version of Blaydon Races.
