Apparently he's on the verge of getting the most lucrative boot deal ever given to an African.

When he gets his new adidas boots he will be the best player ever like man hew !!!

All the talk of selling him is stupid though, good player what's the point in selling him, when he gets stuck in really gives a shit about the club and is a real attacking threat.

Question is whether Martin's will get any better. For the team to improve next season, Martin's has to play more consistently at a higher level. Pace isn't enough without the ability to finish for a forward and I don't see his overall game improving. We'll get a handful of spectacular goals from him but that isn't enough to lift us into a top six position.

It'll be interesting to see if KK opts for somebody else up front with a better overall game.

  Groan. It's a sorry state when people are pinning that on him as a detrimental factor.

He's scored one 'spectacular' goal this season, anyhow. And that was on the first day of the season. All of his goals this season have been very composed finishes. Aye, he misses a few, but his goalscoring record here is good - especially considering he's thrown about in all sorts of positions this season. Owen's missed more chances than him this year.

And i think it's a load of bollocks to say that a player, at 22/23, cannot improve. Especially with the talent he has. The suggestion really is a peculiar one to make atm too when, under Keegan in this roaming role, he's looked better than ever.

Yeah, you slagged off my favourite player. Biatch.

Carbon copy of Bellamy, scores the impossible but rarely hits the back of the net during one-on-ones, still worth keeping him in our ranks

they are completely different players.

They are but I would say they are both instinctive, especially in terms of finishing and struggle a bit when they have time to think. Not saying you're wrong it's just a similarity to their games.

In a 4-3-3 formation you cannot ignore all the other work he does, he tracked back got tackles in, linked up play and 100% grafted his nutts off.

Once he could have played Owen in at the back but opted to have a dig and try to beat the keeper at his near post, as for the one on one it was a good save from Gorden.

Some things said on this forum are 100% pure wind up, or made up comments just to gain a reaction..

do you really believe that was a good save? or a bad finish? martins put his head down and blasted it, didnt look up to assess where he'd be best putting it, or if there was a pass on, just blindly hit it straight at the keeper. he didnt force gordon to do anything other than come out and narrow the angle which is bog standard goal keeping, i could have done that.

i think if shearer was in that situation the chances of a caressed finish into the bottom corner would have been neigh on 0.

hes jsut camera shy, trust me Nigerians are all famous for being arrogant.  Ask anyone from africa what they think of nigerians  !

What - like all Geordies are delusional?  All Jews are tight arsed? All Muslims are terrorists?

Get back to the gist of the thread man..

relax, his a christian and we all know christians like to make sweeping generalisations. ;)

definately, but imo by the end of robson's time here bellamy's 1on1's had improved massivley, not that martins' wont of course.

Shush! he  is one of our best players, when he is fit and sharp he has the quality to put the best Premiership defences to the sword. With Viduka with a year left (max) and Owen stalling over the next contract it's more important than ever that we keep the best players especially strikers. Martins also has the ability to do the sublime which most Newcastle United players totally lack. Take the goal at White Hart Lane last season or even the influence he had on the game at Birmingham. Those performaces really say it all.

I think Martins one on ones are better than Bellamy's, although Bellamy was more of a team player. I don't think Martin's problems are his finishing, he just needs to be cleverer outside the box.

Bella's more of a team player ? ? ? ?

He was a selfish little s*** who's gob cost us a lot and not just with ref's but with Managers too IE Souness, and its not like he did'nt take shots on when maybe there was better options for a pass.

Martins had a dig when maybe Owen was a better option but he is a striker and if he has to be a bit selfish or he is not going to sore to many goals.

Martins is close to signing new United deal

Apr 23 2008 by Luke Edwards, The Journal

Obafemi Martins

OBAFEMI Martins is on the verge of signing a lucrative new contract as Newcastle United look to fend off any interest in their star players this summer.

Martins’ future at St James’s Park has been the source of conjecture because of the presence of a £13m get-out clause agreed when he joined the club from Inter Milan.

But the Nigerian international has agreed to have that escape clause removed from his new deal as he pledges his long-term future to the club on wages of more than £80,000 a week. The 23-year-old, who would have two years left on his present contract in June, is expected to sign the new four-year deal before the end of the season after his advisers insisted last night the important details have already been agreed.

Talks have been progressing well for several weeks and The Journal understands a verbal agreement is already in place, with just a few minor matters to be clarified before Martins signs.

United manager Kevin Keegan will be delighted to know the striker has bought into his vision of the future for the club, particularly as he has intimated he is keen to play for a club that is in the Champions League.

“In Nigeria they are calling me, they are asking if I will sign a new contract,” said Martins. “They say I should just go away, there are a lot of better teams. But they don’t understand; if you feel passion for a team, even if they have problems you have to help them out. For now I’m still playing here. For now.

“They say this because I miss playing Champions League as well, but a lot of players here at Newcastle have played Champions League. It’s not only me. We’re here now, we have to deal with it and try to help each other. That’s the way I’m thinking.”

Significantly, one of the key things for the striker is that he believes Newcastle are showing the potential to make their European comeback following Keegan’s return to the club.

Although Martins has been less prolific than Michael Owen in United’s new three-man strikeforce, his pace and trickery are key components of the new formation and the fact he is starting regularly – something he did not always manage under former manager Sam Allardyce – has helped him develop a bond with Keegan.

For Newcastle’s manager, though, there is still the challenge of getting Owen to sign a new contract this summer. Although the Newcastle skipper has made plenty of positive noises, he has still not guaranteed he will stay.

That probably has more to do with the fact he has still not heard what the club has to say on the matter in terms of the length of the deal and the wages on offer, but it is likely that, once the Martins talks have finished, chairman Chris Mort will turn his attention to ensuring Owen remains on Tyneside. For now Owen has re-emphasised he is thoroughly enjoying his football at St James’s Park and insisted there was already a sense of anticipation among the players about what next season could hold.

He explained: “It’s the oldest cliché in the book, but we really are all in it together. It’s nice to play some good football, to get some confidence and it’s nice to get the fans’ backing.

“And it’s nice to climb up the table. I couldn’t have imagined saying a few weeks or months ago there really is a buzz and anticipation for next season.

“In a way we want it to continue because we’re on a great run, but if we can take these performances and the confidence we’ve got about us and add one or two top players then it’s going to be exciting times.”

For now Owen and United are focused on making sure they extend their run when they travel to West Ham on Saturday. “We’re not going anywhere now fearing our opponents,” Owen told Newcastle World.

I was talking from a purely footballing view, not off the pitch. Bellamy's work outside the area was probably superior to Martins, but in front of goal, Martins is leagues ahead imo.

Cannot believe all the debate over 1 missed one on one chance, fkn hell OVER redaction!!

To be fair I am more worried about our lack of long range efforts on goal, but in all honesty its not a big problem but bigger than Oba's missed chance.
