Carragher turns on Luton fans because of Taunts

Recommended Posts

The Liverpool Echo has a predictably different version

FANS today told how yobs spat and threw beer at Liverpool star Jamie Carragher as he shook hands with a seven-year-old boy.

Disgusted supporters described how the Reds defender was subjected to a torrent of vile abuse at Lutons Kenilworth Road on Sunday.

Jamie went over to a group of fans who asked for his autograph after the final whistle in the FA Cup clash.

But as he chatted happily to eight-year-old Hamzah Ahmed he was spat at.

Bystanders said beer was flung over Jamie and X-rated references made to his mother in a filthy tirade.

The 29-year-old jumped up on to an advertising hoarding to remonstrate with the offending supporters.

Fans from a nearby executive box were forced to jump across to confront the gang and stop them abusing the Anfield legend.

Sim Hussain, 31, from Luton, was just a few yards away.

He told the ECHO how his nephew was reduced to tears by the louts.

He said: "It was awful. He was making the kids day by coming over and meeting them. He was the perfect gentleman.

"They were swearing at him. The language was terrible and they were even making references to his mother.

"Even then, Jamie just told them to calm down.

"Then someone spat at him and a drink was thrown at him. We had to jump into the box so it all stopped.

"Im from Luton and I thought what happened was disgusting. He didnt have to come over. But he did.

"Theres banter. But that was something completely different.

"The lads who did it were aged between 18-22. Weve been trying to call Luton FC to tell them what happened but they just put us on hold."

Eyewitnesses said the yobs also swore at Liverpool defender John Arne Riise.

But Javier Mascherano even came back over to sign autographs for more fans once the furore had died down.

Today a Liverpool FC spokesman confirmed they had already received three phone calls describing how Carragher was targeted and abused.

He said: "Clearly the behaviour of these fans was completely unacceptable."

One Anfield insider told the ECHO: "The players were warming down on the side of the pitch near the tunnel.

"There were family in the executive boxes and they were running up and down near those boxes.

"They were asked to go and sign some autographs which they did.

"But as they were jogging up and down they started to get a lot of earache from some supporters, some of which was quite nasty.

"Then somebody showered Jamie with a drink, possibly ale, which caused him to briefly react."

It is believed the abuse came from a group of Luton supporters dressed in curly black wigs.

A Luton FC spokesman today said an incident was being investigated by the clubs safety officer.

The clash ended in a 1-1 draw after a battling display from the cash-strapped Hatters.

On Liverpool FC forums Carragher received widespread support from Reds fans.

One said: "Yet again Jamie is standing up for us and showing the passion for his club and city."

If you read it properly you'll find it was Jamie using the calm down and only retaliated angrily when he was spat at and had liquid thrown at him, but don't let the words of an actual LUTON fan spoil your spin.

In a world of scummy little egotistical arseholes (Dyer, Reo-Coker, etc)  Carragher seems a genuine bloke.

Fair enough you may pay £30 to get into a game, doesn't give you the right to spit and throw drinks over people.

Just another "Football fan in gets abuse back and complains shocker"

Scouse, actually I was just going on the two different articles and noting that both could have some truth to them.  I did pin most of the blame on Luton Fans (and acknowledged that they/The Sun conveniently ignored that part).

Unrelated to the rest of the thread but I didnt think it needed a new one....

Just seen a story on SSN about some bunch of supposed Liverpool fans stealing Carragher's 30th Birthday Cake from a restaurant... while him and all his friends and family were there sitting arround.... or so the story went.

Sorry. I just thought it was really funny

I have to admit, I live in the south, though originally from the North, it annoys the fuck out of me when people use the 'Scousers don't work' or 'Scousers are lazy' shit.

Considering it was a southern-voted Tory government that took away the jobs from that region, and secondly that Southerners are the laziest bunch of people I've ever worked with. Funny that, eh?

Had a coined thrown at him and in a daft second chucked it back. I can understand him being upset like. As for the Talksport incident it showed Durham up for what he is. He shit himself. He wouldn't say boo to a goose in the street I reckon.

Did they not give votes to the (capitalised for your benefit) North in those days then?  And you're perfectly happy to throw around a massive generalisation about southerners, as you work with *some of them* - while bemoaning similar generalisation against scousers.  While admitting you live in the south, no less.  Now that's funny, eh?
