There's a new favourite everyday, and i doubt Deschamps will get it.

There were a few quotes from Mort about Deschamps aswell and he was his usual negative self.

 

I haven't read them, enlighten me.

The bookies aren't 'stumped' man. They're making a shitload of money now because there's been so many 'favourites' that people have put money on. They're just luring people to bet on other managers who haven't been 'favourites' now, so watch out.

 

they are a bit worried that an outsider will get it at a stupid price, ie. deschamps was 80/1 and people were throwing money at him, causing panic amongst the bookies. if he gets it, they'll lose a fair bit. they'll definitely make a profit in the end, but not as big as they would if redknapp got it or hughes etc.

SIR JOHN HALL is backing the “dream ticket” of Gerard Houllier and Alan Shearer to manage Newcastle United.

In an interview with The Chronicle Sir John told me today: "If Mike Ashley can pull this off Newcastle United fans will never be out of his debt."

 

The Chronicle revealed on Monday that United chairman Chris Mort had telephoned Shearer in Barbados to tell him he would not be considered for the job.

 

But Shearer has made it clear that he is willing to give it a go, and as I reported yesterday, my feeling is that he would not be averse to working with Houllier.

 

Meanwhile, the Chronicle can also reveal today one big obstacle to new favourite Didier Deschamps taking over at St James’s Park – a lack of a French school in Newcastle for his eight-year-old son.

 

Like Shearer, Sir John still has a tremendous feeling for United, even though he is not involved any more despite his honorary president role.

 

But he told me today: "Gerard Houllier was my choice for the job after Glenn Roeder left and I would love to see him come to the club.

 

"And if he can work closely with Alan Shearer and help him learn all about the managerial side, it would surely be a dream come true for Newcastle supporters.

 

"If Mike Ashley can make this happen it would be tremendous for every Newcastle fan – and I am one of them."

 

The 60-year-old Houllier is now technical director for the French Football Federation, but any talk of him not being interested in coming to United can be taken with a pinch of salt.

 

But what cannot be ignored is Shearer when he says: "This is my club and I would do anything to help them.

 

"I might not have managerial exper- ience, but I know all about this football club, the fans and the area.

 

"The club have had some unbelievable experienced managers in the past, and for whatever reason it has not gone well.

 

"Experience does not guarantee you anything although it does give you a head start.

 

"Managing Newcastle United is a very difficult job, but it is also a great job for me – up there with the England job."

 

The Chronicle revealed yesterday that Houllier was a leading candidate, and that he would be prepared to have Shearer at his shoulder.

 

And Shearer himself added: "If they are after an experienced manager, which they are, he will no doubt have his own man. If he hasn’t, he may not even want me as his No 2.

 

"Again I would say that if someone comes in and wants to talk to me I would be willing to help in any way I can."

 

Meanwhile, I was contacted by the Deschamps camp by Jamie Ladjemi, a leading agent in French football, who were keen to put the claims of their man who captained France to victory in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, as well as leading Monaco to its first Champions League final as coach in 2004.

 

Ladjemi told me today: "I have spoken to Chris Mort about Didier, but he has not come back to me."

 

Deschamps turned down the chance to manage Manchester City before Sven-Goran Eriksson because there was no suitable French school for his son in the North West.

 

And I am told this family situation is something which is high up on the former Chelsea midfielder’s agenda.

 

Of course, the appointment of a new manager is way, way out at the top of Newcastle’s agenda.

 

It appears United now favour a continental manager who can speak English – which would rule out the likes of Mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, Steve McClaren and even Shearer himself.

 

I also understand it is unlikely an appointment will be announced before Saturday.
