Keegan will absolutely love this

Gullit - Newcastle still unrealistic

Former boss says Toon expect too much

By Graeme Bailey  Last updated: 18th January 2008

I think the expectations at Newcastle are so incredibly high that maybe they are not realistic for the people who go to work there.

Ruud Gullit

Quotes of the week

Gullit is one of six men to have managed on Tyneside following Kevin Keegan's original spell in charge - but he lasted little more than 12 months.

Now Keegan has returned to take-over for a second time - but Gullit says the expectation level is still too high.

"I think the expectations at Newcastle are so incredibly high that maybe they are not realistic for the people who go to work there," said Gullit - now coach of Los Angeles Galaxy.

"Newcastle is such a big club and I think they have had great coaches and some big names - Sam Allardyce, Glenn Roeder, Graeme Souness, Bobby Robson, Kenny Dalglish - and therefore it is not about the coaches, it is much more complex than that.

"With Sam Allardyce it was incredible - once he was talked of with the national team and now nothing, and I think again they haven't been realistic there with him. It is not possible there, just not possible.

"Also you have the local press, who have big expectations and big ambitions, and it is not realistic what they ask.

"The most difficult part is that they have to compete with teams who are much more attractive than Newcastle are.

"Most big players and promising young players go to Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

"It means that none of the biggest players want to go there (Newcastle) which is a major a difficulty that you have to deal with."

Gullit does not think Keegan will be able to transform Newcastle's fortunes in the near future

"No, he won't do it. It is not realistic to expect that," Gullit added.

"For the simple reason that the other clubs have a huge advantage because they have the best youngsters and the best players in all these other teams. So it is going to be difficult and it is not realistic.

"A realistic goal is that he needs to have the time to build a team and maybe then in the future they can compete in the league

He's not that wrong tbh, blinkers off.

:yikes:

In the last few days we've gone from a team who might get relegated under Sam to a team who can go out and buy the world's best players and challenge for a trophy.

Keegan's good, but he ain't that good. Expectations have been raised a stupid amount following this appointment.

Anyone seriously said we can get the world's best players and win trophies any time soon? Think thats the aim, not the expectation.

I'm only going on what people are saying in other threads. We'll win 5-0 tomorrow too.

Guys the glass is not half empty

If yoiu are like this now imagine what you will be like if it does start to go wrong

Ride the wave, get exhumed by the euphoria, but don't come on the biggest NUFC forum and spout off like a bunch of muppets because you have reservations.

Accept this for what it is as KK said 'unfinished business' and untill i see otherwise he has my undivided attention

Howay KK

Always makes me laugh,this "expectations" is now the norm when describing the toon.

Am i missing something or is "Expectations" searching for a manager behind your current managers back when that manager won you this:-

    * UEFA Champions League

          o Winners 2004-05

          o Runners Up 2006-07

    * European Super Cup

          o Winners 2005

    * FA Cup

          o Winners 2006

    * FA Community Shield

          o Winners 2006

    * Carling Cup

          o Runners Up 2005

    * FIFA Club World Championship

          o Runners Up 2005

Then maybe "Expectations" is getting rid of a manager that did this:-

    * FA Premier League (2): 2004/05; 2005/06

    * Football League Cup (2): 2004/05, 2006/07

    * FA Cup: 2007

    * FA Community Shield: 2005

Honestly am i missing something?Is wanting your club to fulfill its massive potential and win something really being unreasonable?

Why do the media portray us as such unreasonable fuckwitts all the time..

I don't really like his negativity but honestly, sometimes some of the expectations are pretty unreasonable I must admit.

Then again, it's also being called pragmatic I guess. In any case, being humble goes a long way too,
