Rich
NUFC star Joey Barton cleared of vandalising taxi May 30 2008 Evening Chronicle NEWCASTLE United star Joey Barton has been cleared of criminal damage in the latest twist in the controversial midfielder's career. The 25-year-old was found not guilty at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court of vandalising a taxi after a night out in March last year. The player, who was last week jailed for six months after admitting assault and affray, left court to return to prison after the half-day trial. Prosecutors alleged that the player was with his cousin Joshua Wilson, 19, in the taxi in the early hours of March 4 when a row broke out at a McDonald's in Liverpool. CPS lawyer Robert Jansen said Barton became aggressive when the driver, Michael Kay, refused to queue at a drive-through. He then claimed Barton ripped out the cabbie’s radio after Mr Kay refused to continue the journey. But fingerprints on the smashed screen were not Barton’s, and his cousin admitted in court that he caused the damage. It took magistrates just 15 minutes to acquit the former Manchester City player. Upon hearing the verdict, Barton said "thank you", and smiled at his father. A cynical person might say that his cousin has taken the fall for him...
